Impressions of the NDWS

March 8, 2012

Pictures can be found in your Thursday, March 8, 2012 printed edition of the Valley City Times-Record.

The Times-Record got out and talked to a wide variety of Winter Show attendees on Wednesday, asking them where they’re from and why they came out to the show.

Cleone Genre and Larry Junker of Valley City danced their socks off at Senior Dance Day Wednesday. “Having fun? You bet,” said Junker of the polka-themed music of Marv and the Moonlighters. “We like ‘em all, but we do prefer a good two-step.”

Dolly Nitz, of Rossi, Minn., was spotted having fun during Senior Dance Day at the Eagles.

Why did you come to the Winter Show? Nitz and her husband drive to Valley City specially each year to attend the dance, but don’t partake in the other Winter Show events.

What is your favorite part of the Winter Show? “It’s only a hundred miles,” Nitz said. “We keep coming back (to Senior Dance Day) every year because it’s so much fun.”

Dan Alber, a farmer and rancher from Marion, N.D.
Why did you come to the Winter Show?

“I don’t live very far away, so I came around just for the day to see what’s here again.”

What is your favorite part of the Winter Show? “Looking at the machinery before it moves out, and checking out a few tools.”

Lynsey Schmitz, a fifth grader from Oakes, N.D.
Why did you come to the Winter Show?
“I’m showing pigs and cattle. I’ve been doing it since I was two.”
What is your favorite part of the Winter Show? “Having fun and hanging out with friends.” Schmitz also said she expected to place in both the Steer Classic and Market Hog shows.

Art Anderson, a retired farmer from Rogers, N.D.
Why did you come to the Winter Show?
“Habit, I guess. I’ve been coming ever since back when they held the Winter Show down by Pegg Garage.”

What is your favorite part of the Winter Show? “Looking for something new. Every once in a while there’s some new things. I like to look at the advances in farm equipment and some of the ag programs they present. (On Tuesday) they had an interesting field tiling program.”

Clark Cronquist, a retired farmer and current rancher from Gilby, N.D.
Why did you come to the Winter Show? “To see the cattle (at the Steer Classic Show.) That’s what I want to do, see which is going to win.”
What is your favorite part of the Winter Show? “I think the cattle, the horses and the machinery are the best. We also like to visit with the vendors a little bit.”
