The Valley City High School cross country season was off to a hot start at the Jamestown "Orr"iginals Cross Country Meet at Centennial Forest Course, with temperatures in the high 80â€™s and humidity to match. The young Hi-Liners performed well in the overall competition of 15 teams, especially with many appearing in their first-ever meet.
Casey Engelhard led the boys with a 28th-place finish in the Varsity division.Â Mikaylah Ross, Cherrie Varner, and Jessica Ronning ended up on the awards stand with their strong Junior Varsity performances.Â The JV girls finished 3rd as a team at the meet behind Barnes County North and Shanley.
Casey EngelhardÂ finished 28thÂ with a time of 20:10 in the Boys Varsity 5K. Nathan JohnsonÂ took 61stÂ at 23:18.
Barbara Zubrod placed 56thÂ at 19:32 in the Girls' Varsity 4K.
Mikey Meester finished 38th at 18:54 in the Boys' Junior Varsity 4K. Noah PlagensÂ came through 54thÂ at 20:40 and Jack JordanÂ finished 61stÂ at 22:02.
The Hi-Liners took third place overall in the Girls' Junior Varsity 3K. Mikaylah Ross finished 6thÂ at 13:35, Cherrie VarnerÂ came through in 8thÂ at 13:39, Jessica RonningÂ 17thÂ at 14:05, Jamie RonningÂ 22ndÂ at 14:28, Eliza SchuenemanÂ 60thÂ at 16:38, Mikayla WollaÂ 80th at 18:09, and Molly DockterÂ 86th at 19:04.
The Hi-Liners hope to field complete teams this week when eight more runners will be ready at the Valley City State meet on Friday, which starts at 2 p.m. at the Valley City Country Club.
