April 25, 2014

Valley City senior Austen Meyer struck out four Grand Forks Central batters in six road innings on Thursday, but Knights senior Spencer Meyer fanned 10 Hi-Liners in six frames for the 5-0 game one win. Valley City outhit the Knights 7-6 in game two but came up short, 4-3, in a sixth-inning comeback bid.

Central brought in single runs in the second, third and fifth, and two more in the sixth, on eight total hits and three Valley City errors. Hi-Liner bats produced five hits.

Three Knight runs opened game two, and a pair of Hi-Liner runs answered in the second before Central put up another run in the fourth. Valley City scored one in the top of the sixth to trail 4-3, but could not bring any more runs across.

Sophomore Jordan Magnuson and junior Ben Baasch had two hits each in the second game, and senior Brett Stearns made a five-inning, six-strikeout debut. Central junior Cole Kirchoffner struck out five Hi-Liners in three innings.

Valley City (1-7 overall) hosts Fargo Shanley (2-6) in Saturday’s 5 p.m.-and-7 p.m. doubleheader at Charlie Brown Memorial Field.
