The fifth annual Out of the Darkness walk will be held on Sept 29 at Chautauqua Park in Valley City.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2010 suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in the country. That year, someone in the U.S. died of suicide every 13.7 minutes.
In fact, in 2002, the year Wellness in the Valley was started by Debbie Anderson, Barnes County had one of the highest rural suicide rates in the nation. Two years ago, five Barnes County residents committed suicide in a four-month period.
On Sept. 29, Wellness in the Valley, a suicide prevention program based at Valley City's Mercy Hospital, will hold the fifth annual Out of the Darkness walk in conjunction with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention during national suicide awareness week.
The walk, a 5-kilometer fundraising event, will start at 1 p.m. at Chautauqua Park in Valley City. "The walk is designed to bring awareness of suicide, depression and mental illness," said Anderson.
