Heading to Iowa

February 26, 2013

Courtney Titus led all scorers against Mayville State, and went 7-9 from the arc. Here she goes in clean for two against Mayville.

The VCSU Viking women are headed to Iowa. For the second year, the women are in the N.A.I.A. Women's National Basketball Tournament. The Vikings clinched their trip to Sioux City, IA, with a 78-66 win over Mayville State University .
Senior Courtney Titus led the Vikings with 24 points, picking up 21 of her points going an unbelievable 7-9 from the arc; she picked up her other three from the foul line.
The Vikings did well in tying up the low post. The match-up between Brittany Lehner and Alyssa Hummel and their rival counterparts Angel Tauer and Marcisa McMillan gave the Vikings control of the paint, although the boards were shared, with the Vikings bringing down 37 and Mayville 35.
Twice in the game Mayville gave the Vikings a scare, and both times in the second half. Mayville made a 13-point Viking lead evaporate in just a few minutes went they went on an 11-0 run, pulling within two, 41-39. The Vikings stopped the run with a Sadiqah Jihad three-pointer, and then slowly built their lead back up to 18 points by the 6:33 mark.
And then, all of the sudden, with 46 seconds left, it was a two possession game. Mayville's Sabrina Rude found a sweet spot at the arc and popped four shots that almost did in the Vikings. The Vikings defense held again, and the offense came back to beat Mayville by 12.
Titus led all scorers with 24, followed by Lehner with 19, who also went 11-12 from the line. Jihad was next for the Vikings with 12, and Hummel and Sierra Even each had eight.
"You're always nervous with Mayville," said Jill DeVries, Viking Head Coach. "You know they can make shots in a hurry. But the defense held, and we consider ourselves a defensive team. We did a good job in the low post, but could've done better against dribble-drive penetration. But they held--and Courtney {Titus} hitting all those three didn't hurt, either. I'm really proud of those kids."
