Harriet Johnson

The funeral for Harriet Johnson, 68, Valley City, ND will be conducted at 2 PM Friday, May 9, 2014 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Valley City with Pastor Jolene Knudson-Hanse officiating. Interment will be in Woodbine Cemetery. She died Tuesday May 6th. Visitation will be from 5PM until 7 PM Thursday at the Lerud-Schuldt Funeral Home with a Prayer Service beginning at 7 PM.
Harriet Dian (Jorgenson) Johnson was born Oct. 17, 1945 at Valley city, ND the daughter of Howard and Dorothy (Stephenson) Jorgenson. Harriet married Jerome M. Johnson Sept. 3, 1965, and they have resided in Valley City, ND.
Harriet graduated from College High School, attended Valley City State College and Interstate Business College, Fargo, ND, for legal secretary, bookkeeping, and business law. She took several courses of law and modeled for a New York agency.
Harriet did the book work for their business “Johnson’s Welding” until health issues slowed up the business. Harriet was employed as Deputy Clerk of the District Court, was clerk of the County Court, and matron for the Barnes County Sheriff’s Office. She worked in the Veteran’s Service Office under Milt Kane and the Disaster Emergency Office including the Barnes County Zoning Commission. Prior to her employment for the county she was employed by many Valley City business setting up books and doing audits, which included the Grain Exchange for International Multi-Foods in Valley City. She was also employed by the Chamber of Commerce-Western Union and the North Dakota Winter Show with the move from the north part of Valley City to its present location. Working setting up the pledges for the new building. She also set up the books for the Red River Valley Fair when they moved from Fargo to West Fargo and Farmotors of Valley City(presently Valley City Equipment) following their fire. She was also an assistant to Arnold Sandness doing audits of Valley City businesses for several years.
Harriet was active in her church; as a Sunday School teacher, a mentor, Communion teacher, and co-chair of the Alter Guild and facilitated several Purpose Driven Life classes. She was a very active member of the Valley City Business and Professional Women’s Club (BPW). She held all the local offices, all offices except Treasurer on the state level, including North Dakota State President 1988-1989. She lobbied for the Family Medical leave Bill in Washington,DC and was instrumental in the opening of the Abused Persons Outreach Center and has been a member of the Board of Directors since it opened in 1986, holding many Board offices. In May 2007 she became a commissioned Stephen Minister through the Faith Lutheran Church of Valley City, later known as a lay minister.
Harriet is survived by her husband, Jerome, a daughter, Karla Jo (Mrs. Shawn Ranisate) of Valley City, ND; a son, Boyd (Lisa) Johnson and six grandchildren Karly Jo (Dan Hess), Allison, Garrett, and Kory Johnson; Samantha Jo and Jessica Dian Ranisate; two great-grandchildren Kylie Jo Johnson-Daniels and Halle Hess; two sisters, Judy Anderson of Valley City, ND and Joyce Saji of Apple Valley, MN; and her Schnauzer, “Sis”. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Dorothy Jorgenson; grandparents Gabe and Gusta Jorgenson, Nels and Clara Jorgenson, and Stephen Jorgenson; and her dogs Ozie, Otis Von Buster, Missy Ann, Snooper, and Lady who brought so much comfort and love to her.
