Grilled Veggies to be Served at Farmers Market
Valley City’s Monday and Thursday Farmers Market will feature free samples of grilled vegetables on Thursday, Aug. 23 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Pamida parking lot.
Dr. James Buhr, physician at Sanford Health in Valley City and Jerdan Ruff, a UND medical student working with Buhr will be the guest chefs.
Samples will include grilled zucchini squash, onions and peppers. In addition to the vegetables, there will be free samples of locally grown beef prepared in a crock pot and served on whole wheat buns prepared by members of the Farmers Market.
Teresa Garrahy of the Young Peoples Healthy Heart program said “This is a fun annual event that features locally grown produce which is provided by members of the Farmers Market. Locally grown foods provide quality food and good nutrition. Money earned locally (e.g. buying produce from local growers) turns over seven times in the community.”
The samples will be served by members of the Barnes ON THE MOVE Partnership. Everyone is encouraged to come out and taste.
Norma Voldal, manager of the 34-year-old operation, said Monday vegetable grilling by the Young People’s Heathy Heart Program has been part of the market “for at least five years.”
Voldal said grilling vegetables are all locally grown, and provided by market stand operators.
“This year they also plan to grill some local grass-fed meat sold at the Farmers Market,” Voldal said.
“We will have whole wheat buns, veggies and meat – whatever vegetables grilled depends on what is available – I think it will be onions and zucchinis. They (grillers) do a good job and it draws a lot of people,” Voldal said.
Voldal said in the past and likely this year “our tables sometimes give out raw veggie samples or jelly on crackers.”
Voldal said she has been involved with the Monday and Friday Farmers Market since it began.
The Monday Farmers Market takes place 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Rosebud Visitors Center, and the Thursday Farmers Market takes place from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Pamida parking lot.
