Garage fire blankets north VC with smoke

March 1, 2012

A fire under the engine of a car on 8th Avenue Northwest is believed to be the culprit behind the large plumes of smoke that blanketed the north end of town Thursday evening.

A residential garage was filled with flames, which were quickly knocked down by the Valley City Fire Department, but plumes of acrid smoke billowed from the structure even after the flames had dissipated.

"(The resident) was here, and the garage door was open when the neighbors started to see smoke," said Fire Chief Gary Retterath.

"When it all gets out of there, we'll take a look. He said it was a fire under the engine, and that he could see (flames) down under the car, because the smoke wasn't that low yet."

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation by the VCFD.
