Floods and Droughts
After two recent years of record-breaking floods in the area, it may seem like the future of Valley City looks very wet, but according to two local women, a drought may be just as likely, although predictions can change rapidly.
World Water Day is observed March 22 as an effort to raise awareness on water issues. Jean Legge, former science teacher at Litchville Marion High School, and local water advocate Madeline Luke, both say that while the future of water in the area may be uncertain, the area should prepare for extreme weather events — whether it's a flood or drought.
"We just come off a drought year, but now all of a sudden we're thinking, 'are we going to flood this year?'" Luke said. "So it's this real dis-ease at how things change because it wasn't just dry last year — it was really dry."
