Thursday, as the Hi-Liners hosted their final home meet of the regular season, a triangular with Fargo and Davies, it wasn't much different.
Johnson got the better score in the floor, Fisher narrowly had the better score on the beam and vault. The two even finished the day with a tie on the bars, scoring 8.2 each.
By the end, the two finished with their best scores of the year. Fisher took third place all around with 35.15 points and Johnson was a close fifth with 35.05 points.
Though it's not necessarily a rivalry, the two have learned to help push each other in the right direction.
"We push each other to try just landing one more skill," Johnson said.
Fisher agreed with it.
"She has her better events and I have mine, and they kind of even out," she said.
It was the first time the two broke the 35-point barrier this season and was part of a strong team effort that left Valley City coach Dave Fisher pleased.
The Hi-Liners took second place, behind Fargo but ahead of Davies, and had three girls — Fisher, Johnson and Brienne Roehrich — place in the top eight all around.
Valley City had one event win, with Abby Brown taking first in the bars, and 15 top-eight placers.
It was the last meet for the team this season at the Youth Sports Complex, though the Hi-Liners could have one more potential home meet if they qualify for the state meet, which is being held Feb. 22-23 at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.
Thursday's meet left coach Dave Fisher very pleased.
"I thought they did excellent, especially for the way we started out," he said. "We were real shaky on beam and them some of the girls started pulling us out of that hole, so to speak, started hitting beam routines, and that just carried over the rest of the meet.
"Obviously, you want to win, but the way they persevered and came out of it, that really showed a lot of character."
The included some of Valley City's lower scores of the day, but also included a second and third place finish by Fisher and Johnson, who posted scores of 9.4 and 9.2, respectively.
The Hi-Liners then moved to the beam, where they got a 4-5-6 finish from Johnson, Roehrich, and Fisher. From there, the Vault event gave Valley City four placers, with Rebekah Fisher taking sixth with an 8.7, Johnson taking seventh with 8.6, and Sara Gilbertson and Emilee fisher tying for eighth with 8.55 points each.
The meet concluded on the bars, where Brown took the win with a score of 8.45. Emilee Fisher took 4th with 8.3, Rebekah Fisher and Johnson tied for 5th with 8.2, and Brienne Roehrich took eighth with 8 points even.
Though Valley City will need to qualify to get back to the state meet, Dave Fisher was optimistic with only three meets left until the Eastern Dakota Conference regional Feb. 15.
"As we're going now, each meet the scores are going up a bit and it looks like we're going to peak at just the right time," he said. "It's hard to determine that this far out, but as it stands right now, it looks like they're on the right track."
