Fire Heavily Damages VC House

April 21, 2014

Valley City Fire Fighters respond to a house fire at 643 Central Avenue North Monday morning.

No one was hurt when fire heavily damaged a Valley City house at 643 Central Ave. North Monday Morning, said Valley City Fire Chief Gary Retterath at the scene about 11 a.m. Monday.

Sometime between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. firefighters heard a report of smoke coming from the residence, Retterath said.

“I was at the state and they said smoke was coming out of the house, and there sure was, coming through a roof vent,” Retterath said.

No one was home at the occupied residence owned by Conrad Hoff during the fire, Retterath said.

“Once we opened up the door, it was really full of smoke and pressure.”
Approximately 20 Valley City firefighters were on the scene about 11 a.m., and Retterath said the turnout by firefighters was a good one.

Valley City residents heading to work north on Central Avenue from Main Street about 8:30 a.m., were greeted by the smell and sight of heavy smoke, along with flashing lights on firefighters' vehicles at the residence, a couple of blocks from the Valley Senior High School and Junior High complex.

“It took us a good hour to get the fire under control” after arriving, Retterath said.

As of 11 a.m. Retterath said he had no idea what started the fire, and the blaze was under investigation.
