Wednesday, December 7
"Introduction to Baby Sign Language" will be offered at Headstart in Valley City from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Class will cover the basics of using simple sign language to facilitate early communication with infants and toddlers. Call the Parent Resource Center at 845-8528 to register for this free class.

Thursday, December 8
Wildlife photographer Tom Ulrich will give a presentation 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Foss Music Building. He will be presenting a collection of his wildlife/nature images from his extensive travels.

Friday, Dec. 9
The VCSU Fine and Performing Arts Department will host a Fall Student Exhibition Reception from 5-6:30 p.m. at the VCSU Gallery.

Saturday, December 10
The Bluegrass Association of North Dakota will hold its Valley City December bluegrass jam session at the Barnes County Museum on Saturday, December 10 from 1:00 - 5:00 pm.  The acoustic jam is free and open to the public.  Beginner musicians are welcome.  For more information call John Andrus at 701-762-4891.

2-3 p.m. in the Barnes County Historical Museum, VCSU Band Director James Adams and VCHS Band Director Tom Kjelland will host the first Annual Tuba Christmas event in Valley City. Registration for participants is $5 and will begin at 9:00am in the VCHS Band room. The ensemble will rehearse from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the band room, and perform at 2 p.m. Tuba players of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate. Free to the public.

VCSU Fine and Performing Arts presents the EBC Christmas Hit Parade, 7:30 p.m. at Vangstad Auditorium.

Valley City Parks and Recreation's Youth Basketball Tournament for grades 4, 5 and 6. All teams are guaranteed 3 games.

Sunday, December 11
The VCSU Community School of the Arts (CSA) will hold two recitals on Dec. 11, at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Froemke Auditorium.  The recitals will feature a wide variety of performances on instruments such as piano, guitar, flute, trombone, violin, and voice. Free to the public.

Monday, Dec. 12
VCSU Fine and Performing Arts Garage Bands, 4 p.m. at Vangstad Auditorium.

Open House at the Valley City Parks & Recreation Fitness Center set for Monday, Dec. 12 from 6 – 8 p.m. The Fitness Center is located downstairs in the Rec Center, 140 4th St. SW. This is for anyone interested in the Fitness Center and will feature demonstrations on the new Nautilus fitness equipment. Register for free prizes.

Tuesday, Dec. 13
Courthouse Sing, 7:30 p.m. in the Barnes County Courthouse Rotunda. The Troubadours, Valley Voices and Valley Children's Choir will perform and offer sing-alongs.

Wednesday, Dec. 14
Dacotah Bank open house, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

U.S. House Republican Debate and candidate forum, 7:30 p.m. at Vangstad Auditorium on the VCSU campus.

Thursday, Dec. 15
Hospice of the Red River Valley will be hosting a "Light up a Life" community remembrance event on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Barnes County Historical Museum, 315 Central Ave N. The event will feature holiday music, refreshments and a special remembrance presentation. The event is free and open to the public. A freewill offering for Hospice of the Red River Valley will be taken.
Community members are encouraged to bring an ornament to hang on the memorial tree in memory of a loved one who has passed away during the last year. Ornaments may be dropped off at the Barnes County Historical Museum between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. beginning Dec. 2. They may also be brought to the Light up a Life event.

Friday, December 16
A benefit spaghetti supper for Joyce Green will run 5 to 7 p.m. at the Valley City Eagles Aerie, 345 12th Ave. N.E. She underwent lung surgery Nov. 18 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. The benefit is being used to defray transportation costs and living expenses during family stay in Rochester.

Saturday, Dec. 17
Santa Day at Dakota Plains Co-op, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pictures with Santa, toys, goodies, sleigh rides for the kids, gas and merchandise discounts, truckload pizza sale, and Christmas in the Valley Button grand prize giveaway from noon to 1 p.m.

Sunday, Dec. 18
Ice Skating open to the public Sunday evenings Nov. through March from 6-8 p.m. at the Youth Sports Complex.

Public Open Roller Skating will be held Sundays from Nov. to April at the Rec Center from 6-8 p.m. Sponsored by the Valley City Optimist Club.
