Emil Rudolph Hass, Jr

Emil Rudolph Hass, Jr, 81, went Home to Glory, after a short battle with cancer, on June 6, 2013, surrounded by his wife and family, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 15th at Grace Free Lutheran Church in Valley City.  Visitation will be held on Friday, June 14th from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Grace Free Lutheran Church and one hour before the service on Saturday morning. A time of sharing memories and fellowship will be held at 7:00 PM Friday evening at the church. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery near Valley City.
Emil was born September 23, 1931 on the family farm in Ashtabula Township, north of Valley City, ND to Evelyn and Emil Sr. He attended school at Alderman School District 78, and graduated from Valley City High School in 1949, where he met his wife, Donna (Aaker). He attended VCSU for a couple quarters. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church and later joined First Lutheran where he married Donna in 1951. They are charter members of Grace Free Lutheran Church in VC, where he was an active member of his church: serving on the council, singing in the choir, a Sunday School teacher and superintendent, Bible study leader, and in the Men’s Brotherhood. He was instrumental in organizing the services at the Fishermen’s (Lake) Chapel at Lake Ashtabula. He served on the AFLC Budget Committee, was instrumental in the Billy Graham and Time to Run evangelistic crusades, and taught evangelistic classes.  Emil farmed with his father and later with brother-in-law, Dale Korf. In 1967 the Hass’s moved to the family farm and Emil took over the farming operations until 1990 when he retired. They moved back to town in 1992. He worked and managed several feed stores and for a local cattle men. In 2003 he began driving bus for the Barnes County Senior Center until January 2013. Emil received many awards for his work in FFA, 4-H, Conservation Award from the Barnes County Soil Conservation District in 1995 with his son, Tom, and from the Barnes County Senior Center. He served 8 years as a Supervisor for the Barnes County Soil Conservation District. Emil enjoyed to hunt and fish, and taught a class on fishing and cleaning fish. He was active in his community: a charter member of the Valley Troubadours, Scout Master for ten years of Troops 566 and 560, and served as District Scout Commissioner, 4-H leader for Ashtabula Lakers Club, member of Barnes County Wildlife, and volunteered for many organizations. He organized and managed several baseball and softball teams. He was in bowling leagues, and took up golf. Emil was best known for his continued involvement in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Emil is survived by his wife of 62 years, Donna, children Thomas Hass, Julia Hass, all of Valley City, David (Jeanne) Hass, Pewaukee, WI, Suzanne Hass, Lakeville, MN, sister Eleanor (Don) Senrick, Apple Valley, MN, JoAnn Korf, Valley City, brother-in-law Allan Froemke, sister & brother-in-law Bonnie & Eldwyn VanBruggen, 7 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren many nieces & nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Arlene (Allan) Froemke, baby sister Betty Jean, brother-in-law Dale Korf.
