Zach Doty, a 2014 Valley City High School graduate, received a Triple Crown trophy, sponsored by the North Dakota department of AmVets, for his 2013-14 Greco, Folk and Freestyle wrestling championships, at Valley City’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Club.

“It’s something the AmVets have done for years,” said Gary D. Schlagel, Commander of Willis W. Weber AmVets Post 3. “It’s quite an accomplishment. Anytime we can do anything for the youth and the community, it’s our way of recognizing them.”

Doty, who comes from a wrestling family, began his career in kindergarten and has since finished ranked in the State Class Wrestling Tournament in all but his sophomore year, took second in 2013’s Class A State Tournament 182-Pound Division and brought home the 182-Pound championship from Feb. 13-15’s State Tournament at the Bismarck Civic Center.

“Zach was blown away — he thought it was real neat to get the award,” Post 3 Employment and Service Officer Scott Crump said. “Zach’s a heck of a kid, and it’s a heck of an award.”

Doty will extend his career this fall at Ridgewater College in Willmar, Minn.
