Didier Appointed County Auditor

November 27, 2012

Barnes County Commissioners appointed Beth Didier as county auditor during a special meeting on Monday.

Didier, who lives near Eckelson, is currently employed at the Valley City USDA office as a rural development loan specialist. Didier has a business degree from Valley City State University and worked at the Barnes County Auditor’s office as deputy auditor for nine years. In 2002, Didier ran for the office of auditor but was unsuccessful. This will be a homecoming for Didier, she said.

“I’m excited to be taking on this challenge and I look forward to working for the county,” Didier said.

Her first challenge as auditor is to “find out where we are and find out what we need to move forward,” she said.

Didier was the second choice candidate of a five-person hiring committee appointed by the County Commission. Joe Skyora was the committee’s first choice, but after interviewing him, the commission chose to also interview Didier. On Monday, commissioner Phil Leitner announced that Skyora had withdrawn his application because he didn’t want to be appointed by a split commission. The commission voted unanimously to appoint Didier.

Leitner, who served on the hiring committee, was surprised the commission didn’t appoint Skyora after the committee recommended him.
“I thought everything was on the table,” said Leitner.

But Leitner believes Didier will be a good auditor, he said. She’s personable and has unique experience from working in the Barnes County Auditor’s Office in the past, experience that is specific to the county, Leitner said.

“I’m very happy we have an auditor,” he said
The office of county auditor is an elected position, but the county was forced to appoint a new auditor when Ed McGough resigned earlier this year because of health problems. The position will be up for election in 2014.
