DAV Seeks Applicants

September 4, 2012

Valley City’s local Disabled American Veterans Chapter is seeking applicants for it’s long-running, twice-a-year scholarship program, said Jim Verwey, a chapter member and Barnes County Veterans Service Officer.

Verwey said Friday the scholarships are reserved for relatives of chapter members – “sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters.”

Valley City’s chapter is the Clarence “Tom” Lemley Chapter 24.

Said Verwey, the scholarships are “funded right out of the chapter. We do them twice a year – once in the fall and once in the spring. They have to be relatives of Valley City DAV members.”

Verwey said the local DAV has been “sponsoring the scholarships for years.”
Officers this year include Eldred Knutson as commander and Dave Vareberg as adjutant, Verwey said.

Vareberg said Friday the Valley City chapter has about 172 members, mostly residents of Barnes County, with a few from smaller nearby counties.

Some members are also living outside of North Dakota and at the State Veterans Home in Velva. “Locally we have about a dozen real active members.”

Vareberg said, “We started the scholarship about 12 years ago.
Applicants must have a connection with a DAV member (be a relative). We would like to give out two scholarships a year. Our goal is to help disabled vets and youth.”

Applications must be returned no later than Sept. 30 for the fall semester of the 2012-2013 school year, Verwey said.

Students must include a copy of their most recent transcript and a recent photograph of themselves. Applications with attachments should be returned to the Veterans Service Office, Barnes County Courthouse, 230 N.W. Fourth St., Room 204, Valley City, N.D. 58072.
