County: Stay in City Building or Move Out?

March 6, 2013

Eldred Knutson

Barnes County commissioners discussed the advantages and disadvantages of renewing its lease in the Valley City Law Enforcement Center where the Barnes County Sheriff's Department is located, or moving the sheriff's department to a new location.
The commission heard testimony from members of the sheriff's department, including Barnes County Sheriff Randy McClafflin, who expressed concerns about mold contamination and security issues in the current location. These concerns were brought up in addition to concerns some Barnes County Commissioners had already expressed over high lead levels in the basement of the building.
Barnes County Commissioner Eldred Knutson told commissioners and the gallery that another building was available that had more space and would cost the county less per-square-foot than the city building would if the county approved a new lease agreement.
Knutson also suggested moving the county's 9-1-1 dispatch center to another county building.
