Cold Makes Calving Difficult In Barnes County

March 28, 2013

Jim Stevens

Barnes County cattle rancher Jim Stevens is not as positive about his older cows. It is a tough time for calving because of the cold weather. Going from a heifer's internal body temperature of 101 degrees to below freezing is hard on calves. The temperature difference is a shock to new calves.

This season is a tough one for calving with a relatively late spring and much snow still on the ground near his Bar Lazy S Ranch off the Kathryn Road south of Valley City.
