Churches Alerted about Scam Artist

January 27, 2014

The Valley City Police Department is cautioning area churches about a convicted child sex offender from California who is allegedly operating a scam.
A release from the VCPD said Kenneth Monk, a 5-foot-9-inch, 140-pound white male with brown hair and brown eyes, has been walking into churches, telling the congregations that his wife has died in a car accident and he needs money to get to Forest, Miss., to go to the funeral and be with his children. It's estimated that Monk is about 35 years old.
North Dakota churches in Washburn, Wilton and Velva have been targeted, and each has given Monk money.
Monk is driving a 1999 burgundy Suburban with North Dakota license plates.
If encountered, authorities say to call the VCPD at (701) 845-3110 or local law enforcement agency and not to approach the individual.
