CCHD Addresses Alcohol Issues

Barnes County residents recently surveyed do not believe alcohol abuse is a serious problem among adults, and they believe underage drinking in Barnes County is less of a problem than it is in other parts of the state. But the statistics imply otherwise.

According to data collected by the Valley City-Barnes County Health District, alcohol use is socially acceptable, and underage drinking occurs and the acceptable age is between 14 and 16 years of age.

But, about 20 percent of Barnes County adults admit to binge drinking (more than five drinks in a sitting) in the past 30 days, about 25 percent of Barnes County youth admit to binge drinking in the past 30 days, and almost 40 percent of Barnes County youth admit to using alcohol in the past 30 days.
