Care Center Goes Red

February 14, 2013

Special to the Times-Record The Sheyenne Care Center (SCC) participated in National Wear Red Day on Friday, Feb. 1 with a number of their staff wearing red to remind everyone to take care of your heart by eating healthy and exercising. They are also participating in blood pressure screenings through an AHA grant to the Barnes ON THE MOVE Partnership of which SCC is one of the 13 partners.

National Wear Red Day, the kick-off to American Heart month was Friday, Feb. 1 and the Sheyenne Care Center took the challenge in more ways than one. On Feb. 1, most of the staff dressed in red to remind staff, residents, and visitors to choose a heart healthy change to reduce their risk of heart disease.

The SCC is also taking part in a blood pressure screening program to help staff be heart healthy. The American Heart Association awarded the Barnes ON THE MOVE Partnership a grant to conduct this program because too many people either have undetected high blood pressure, or have been diagnosed with hypertension but it is not properly controlled.

All staff at the SCC, which is one of the 13 ON THE MOVE partners, are invited to have their blood pressures done on three different dates. Information on how to obtain and keep a healthy blood pressure is also discussed. High blood pressure is a risk factor for both stroke and heart disease.

A healthy blood pressure is 120 over 80. If one has a blood pressure of 140 over 90 it is identified as hypertension. Pre-hypertension is a systolic (upper number) from 120-139 over a diastolic pressure (lower number) of 80-89, and an individual would be advised to make lifestyle changes such as eating healthier and exercising.

“Sodium is a concern for most Amercians related to blood pressure,” states Char Burchill, licensed registered dietitian at the Sheyenne Care Center. “The AHA recommendation is to eat no more than 1500 mg of sodium and many frozen dinners or one cup of canned soup have almost 1000 mg of sodium.”
