Bullorama in Sibley Labor Day Weekend

The Dazey Sodbusters Club will celebrate its 68th anniversary this year with the 10th Sodbuster Stampede Bullorama in Sibley on Sunday. Along with a full day of bull riding, dancing and pedal tractor pulling, the Sodbuster club will honor Larry Martin as the 2013 Outstanding Sodbuster of the Year.
martin, an 18-year member of the Sodbusters, was voted outstanding Sodbuster by his peers. According to Sodbuster president, Tony Heinze, Martin does whatever is necessary for the club including participating in fundraising events mowing and cleaning with he does with help from his grandsons.
A Hunter, N.D. native, Martin retired from farming and working for the city of Hunter before moving to Dazey where he served as Sodbuster vice president for 16 years.
Martin, who is married with three children and seven grandchildren, likes to garden, fish, hunt and travel when he's not busy with the Sodbusters. He especially enjoys spending time with his grandchildren. "I like little kids," Martin said. "I should have had them first."
One of Martin's duties, along with the rest of the Sodbusters is to get ready for the annual Bullorama. Before anything can happen on Labor Day weekend, bleachers need to be set up, a band needs to be hired for the street dance, corral panels need to be checked over, and preparations need to be made for the kids pedal tractor pull.
This year, the event starts on Sunday, Sept. 1 with a Calcutta auction. Bull riders and bulls will be auctioned off before the rides. Whoever "buys" a rider or a bull will get to keep part of the purse.
At 3 p.m., bull riding with riders from several states begins. The kid's pedal tractor pull starts at 5 p.m. At 7 p.m. a ceremony honoring the Sodbuster of the year will be held. At 8:30 p.m., after the festivities end, a dance featuring Thunder Ridge will be held until 1 a.m. Spinner's Limo Service will provide rides to and from the event.
Admission to the bullorama is $12 for adults, $8 for students, and preschoolers get in free. Admission to the dance will be $8 after 7 p.m.
Sodbusters will hold raffles before and during the event. Prizes include one-half a beef bundle, a flat screen TV, a gas grill, a gun cabinet and more.
Proceeds from the Sodbuster's event go toward a variety of community functions including fire and ambulance, school functions, and a scholarship fund.
