By Matt Blumkin Valley City Times-Record OAKES – Defending state B Legion champion LaMoure fell to Edgeley 8-6 in extra innings on Wednesday in the Section 2 Legion tournament. “They out-hit us,” LaMoure coach Jason Thielges said. “They scored eight runs on 10 hits.” Edgeley had given LaMoure close contests earlier in the season. LaMoure survived both 5-2 and 4-1. “If you told me that we were going to score eight runs against Ben Holen and Ben Watkins, I would have said you’re crazy,” Edgeley coach Tyler Hanson said. “Those are two of the best pitchers in the state.” Edgeley stayed with LaMoure 4-4 through six innings despite facing Holen and then Watkins on the mound. Edgeley then took the lead twice late in the game on Wednesday despite, and the second time around proved successful in surviving a LaMoure rally. LaMoure fell behind 5-4 in the top of the seventh when Travis Jones hit an RBI single with two runners on base to give Edgeley the lead. LaMoure might have seen it all end there, but the second base runner missed home plate, which would have scored two runs. It counted for a third out instead. “It’s just like being thrown out first,” Hanson said. “Obviously they were upset.” “It was a big turning point,” Hanson added. “Our kids responded well.” Donny Schrader tied things up for LaMoure in the bottom of the seventh with a hit to the centerfield wall. It brought home Ben Watkins as LaMoure sat on the edge of losing with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

By Matt Blumkin Valley City Times-Record LISBON – Valley City and Lisbon keep things close on the diamond when the two Dickey-LaMoure League teams meet. “It’s just two good teams going at it,” Valley City coach Lance Lukes said. They have played four games this year with a four-run margin or less. Valley City and Lisbon played their closest game yet as Lisbon edged Valley City 4-3 in the league championship game on Tuesday. “Valley City has a nice team,” Lisbon coach Brad Bittner said. “We knew it was going to be a tough game.” Valley City established a 2-1 lead through the first four innings, but Lisbon tied up the game in bottom of the fifth. In the sixth, Trevor Justesen singled and moved Trent Egan to third. Justesen then ran to steal second, distracting Lisbon as Egan came home to give Valley City a 3-2 edge. “That’s a play we worked on, and it was perfect timing too,” Lukes said. Lisbon answered back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ty Michels ripped a single to centerfield for an RBI. Reed Huether then hit an RBI single, capitalizing on a Valley City fielding error. Lisbon took a 4-3 lead. “Our guys did a nice job of putting the bat on the ball, hitting the ball hard,” Bittner said. “We had the bases loaded a couple of times, but we couldn’t put anything across.” Valley City’s six fielding errors also helped Lisbon put runs on the board. Starting pitcher Tony VanDyke allowed only two earned runs in the game. For full story, see Wednesday's edition of the Valley City Times-Record. |
