Stroke screening coming to V.C., hospital officials skeptical |
|

By Steve Browne Valley City Times-Record A firm is bringing equipment for vascular testing and bone density to Valley City next Tuesday, but Mercy Hospital representatives are skeptical. Heartland Health and Imaging is offering testing at the Valley City Senior Center on Second Ave. S.E., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. JoAnn Korf, Senior Center site manager, said, “The owner offered this thing and said he'd send some literature. I talked to him on the phone and he said it was OK if we scheduled it.” The company will set up booths with their ultrasound equipment to perform four tests: carotid artery, abdominal aortic aneurysm, peripheral arterial disease and bone density screening. “We check your risk for stroke with ultrasound. It's very important to have done, because 99 percent of the time strokes have no symptoms,” said Cory Bailey, owner-operator of Heartland Health. Each vascular test costs $40, the bone density test $30. A package of the three vascular tests costs $110, and the complete package $125. Baily said the tests performed in a hospital can cost hundreds of dollars apiece. Bailey said, “You can't just go into a doctor's without symptoms and ask for the tests, because insurance won't pay for it. Any one of these tests in a hospital can cost from $300 to $500.” However, Brad Schiller, manager of the Radiology Department of Mercy Hospital is skeptical about the service offered. “I'd want to know if they are served by a radiology group, and how is it you can perform an exam without a valid reason?” Schiller said. Schiller confirmed that a carotid bilateral test costs $552, and an abdominal aortic aneurysm test $378, but said the tests have to be interpreted by a radiologist, who'll want to know the credentials of the technician administering the ultrasound. Crawling Artists building recognition for Valley City arts |

By Steve Browne Valley City Times-Record Members of the Crawling Artists group are getting ready for the fourth annual art crawl, Sept. 26 to 28 this year, and building a reputation for the arts in the Valley City area, statewide and beyond. Several members of the Valley City Crawling Artists were recently notified of their acceptance into the New Bohemia Traveling Show, which will tour North Dakota beginning this fall and end in 2010. Crawling Artists Linday Whitney, Sue Morrissey, Clint Saunders and Daron Krueger all had pieces accepted. Clint Saunders of the Obsessed Photographers Group said the Pekin show is, “in my opinion the best show in North Dakota. The level and quality of art in this show is amazing, and it seems to get better every year. Not only that, but this show seems to have more sales than all of the other shows put together.” Saunders said the groups' reputation is spreading beyond North Dakota. “Several artists from our group have had shows this summer, and have upcoming shows outside of North Dakota including Seattle, Minnesota, North Carolina, and New York,” Saunders said. “Historically, North Dakota is a very creative place,” said Linda Whitney, printmaker and VCSU art professor. | I love watermelon and peaches during the summer. It's hard to find good ones, but worth it when you do. I also like blueberries on pancakes. Mary Durkis - Valley City Everyone should check out "Wanted" and "Hancock" this summer. Great flicks. Both were AMAZING. "Dark Knight" is also looking quite promising. Brenda Gaarder - Valley City Summer school, family reunions and hanging out at the pool with Caleb and Aurora. April Faucett - Valley City Theres nothing better than a good old family reunion! Betty Risser - Sanborn, ND Being able to watch Caleb at his ball games with trevin, and talk with Aurora at the family reunion about things. Julie Hass - Valley City The best thing about summer is spending time with family and friends outdoors. Enjoying the few months of nice weather we actually get. Stacey Stephens - Fargo The best summer ever was taking my family back home to Valley City after 11 years. Going to the lake and having the time of our lives with family and friends. The 4th of July is one we will never forget. Thanks Darin Syverson, and Dan and Rach Peltier. Valley City Rocks. Aaron Syverson - Yuma, AZ
