The Barnes County Municipal Airport on the southern edge of Valley City has received the “2011 General Aviation Airport of the Year” award, said Tim Thorsen, president of the Airport Association of N.D.
The award was presented by the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission.
The award was presented March 6 at the Upper Midwest Aviation Symposium held in Bismarck. The award is sponsored by the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission in conjunction with the Airport Association of N.D.
This award is for excellence in maintaining safety, project management, and community awareness.
Presenting the award was Tim Thorsen, President of the Airport Association of N.D., and Larry Taborsky, Executive Director of North Dakota Aeronautics Commission. Airport Authority Chairman Dennis Helland, Steve Nielson, Tim Logan and clerk Lori Jury accepted the award for the airport.
“It was quite an honor,” Jury said Thursday.
Jury said the airport has been receiving forms to nominate an airport for the award for years. “This year the state airport authority asked me why we hadn’t submitted a form before. They encouraged me to submit one. Airports have to toot their own horns.”
Along with airport accomplishments listed on the award, Jury said the airport’s flight school is also very successful with 19 students this year.
Accomplishments for the airport noted for 2011 were:
The airport’s main project for the year was a concrete reconstruction of their 4,200 foot primary runway that was completed on Oct. 29.
In addition to this runway, a new runway lighting system was installed and many of the airport signs had been updated. Wireless internet and digital television improvements were made to the terminal lounge area and refreshments are now available for guests of the airport.
The Airport Authority also took an active role this past year by providing fuel for events which provided free airplane rides for the community and awarded an aviation grant to the Valley City Flying Club to help start up flight instruction through the local state university.
The Authority also sponsored a social noon luncheon and two Aviation Safety Seminars. Plans are currently in the works to have the airport host a Wings and Wheels AirShow that will take place on Sept. 8.
Said Jury, “I’m excited about the air show. It will be a lot of work to do.”
Said Thorsen, “The Barnes County Municipal Airport is congratulated for a tremendous year of accomplishments.”
