Paul Viland, son of Reuben and Beth Viland, Valley City, received the North Dakota State University Honor Award Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 and the Textbook Scholarship in which he will receive $1,000 credit for textbooks for his first year at NDSU. The scholarships recognize high academic achievement.
Viland will enter NDSU in the fall and plans to major in computer engineering. In high school, he was active in National Honor Society, band, pep band, jazz band, theater, student congress, speech, Skills USA, youth group, cross-country and track and field. He is a theater mentor, drum major, Special Olympics volunteer and Bible camp volunteer.
Viland, an Eagle Scout and active member of Boy Scout Troop 560, also received the Matt and JoAnn Budler Youth Development Scholarship. He has heald the positions of Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Scribe and Order of the Arrow Chapter Chief. He was also the top popcorn salesman in the district from 2001 to 2008. He has earned the God and Church Award, Bronze Palm and the Eagle Scout Award.
The Valley City Education Association has awarded two scholarships in the amount of $500 each for the coming school year. ¬†Receiving scholarships are Alyssa Tait, daughter of Lynn Tait and Lori Justesen, and Jacob Denault, son of Wayne and Carol Denault. ¬†To be eligible, applicants must be ¬†graduates of Valley City High School, be a sophomore or junior, and be enrolled and accepted into a teacher education program. Denault is enrolled and accepted in the math education program at UND while Tait is enrolled and accepted into the elementary education program at VCSU.
London Lloyd, daughter of Mark and Patricia Lloyd, and a recent graduate of Valley City High School, was the recipient of a $1,000 Cargill Community Scholarship. In addition to the scholarship, $200 was awarded to her high school library in her honor
Laura Kapaun, VCSU junior in elementary education, was awarded the Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarship for 2012. Laura is from Tower City and is a graduate of Maple Valley High School. She was recently selected as president of the Viking Ambassadors and works part-time at the Student Center.¬†
ne scholarship is awarded locally by the Alpha Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma which is an honorary Society of women educators whose goal is to promote excellence in education.
The annual scholarship is awarded to a woman student with high academic standards and¬†involvement in campus activities.¬† This year¬†the scholarship was dedicated to the memory of Anne Haugaard and Carole King Jefferson.
Brittney Burns, daughter of Bruce and Jill Burns of Valley City, received the North Dakota State University Presidential Honor Scholarship, which totals $10,000 over four years. The scholarship recognizes high academic achievement and requires the student to score a 29 or above on the ACT.
Burns will enter NDSU in the fall and plans to major in medical lab science.
