Valley City and Linton’s bats were nearly as hot as the 90-degree temperatures Sunday at Charlie Brown Field, but Valley City’s cooler heads prevailed, 9-6, for a date with No. 6 Ellendale in Monday’s 2 p.m. District 6 Tournament semifinal.
Babe Ruth dominated LaMoure, 11-0, in the first round on Saturday.
Lance Weiser put Linton on the board in the top of the first as he swooped into home when a teammate took second.
Brandon Pritchett answered for Valley City with a score on a wayward Linton throw to first in the home half. Garret Suhr came across when Linton did not field a popup down the left line, Drew Oberlandeer’s triple to center brought Nate Rodriguez around, and Oberlander scored on Dawson Dietrich’s single to right.
Weiser’s jumping single through the left gap scored Alex Jones and Chase Schiele in the second, but Suhr and Oberlander’s back-to-back walks loaded the Valley City bases and Pritchett came home on Dietrich’s sac fly to left.
Linton’s Cole Vander Laan sent a fourth-inning double to left, but Valley City gunned down would-be scorer Bowdy Roemmich at the plate. Jayden Benz’s single to center sparked a three-run burst for a 6-5 lead, but Rodriguez’s triple to right-center brought Pritchett around in the home half to tie it up at 6-6 after four.
Dietrich scored on a high throw to first in the fifth, Cole McGough collided at home and scrambled for the plate and the run when the ball jarred loose, and Devin Anderson scored moments later for the 9-6 advantage.
Linton put men on first and second with two outs in the seventh, but McGough set the final batter down on strikes for the win.
