Dawson Dietrich scored on a wild bases-loaded pitch in the second inning of Monday’s District 6 Tournament semifinal against Ellendale, Matt Brandvold came home moments later when Garret Suhr wore a pitch with the bases loaded, and Suhr came across in the fifth on a wayward throw to first base for the third and final run of Valley City’s 3-0 win.
Nate Rodriguez and the defense did the rest as Rodriguez struck out 18 batters on a walk, a hit-by-pitch and two four-strikeout innings in a complete-game no-hitter.
“This was a great game all around, and what you want to see in a tournament game to get you to the championship,” Valley City head coach Lance Lukes said. “We had two pitchers out there dueling each other; that’s what you like to see. Rodriguez threw awesomely today: he was in control of almost everything he wanted to do out there on the mound. It nice to see [the] older guys step up in big games and produce like he did.”
