Arlin Gene Melgaard, 71, of Bemidji, MN, formerly of Bottineau, ND, died Saturday, February 2, 2013, in Sanford Bemidji Medical Center in Bemidji.
Arlin was born July 3, 1941, to Harold and Edith (Lunde) Melgaard in Bottineau. He graduated from Bottineau High School and Bottineau School of Forestry. Arlin earned a Human Resource Management Degree in 1979 from NDSU and earned a Master’s Degree in Career and Technical Education from Bemidji State University, where he also served as an adjunct professor. Arlin received the Outstanding Career and Technical Administrator Award of Minnesota in 2002. He also served as president of the Minnesota Career and Technical Administrators in 2004-2005.
He enlisted in the North Dakota National Guard in 1961 and was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis. In 2001, he retired after serving for 40 years with the ND National Guard. For 23 of those years he was affiliated with the 188th Army Band in Fargo, ND.
He married Wanda (Axvig) Bartsch on May 19, 1976, in Bismarck, ND.
Survivors: wife Wanda Melgaard of Bemidji, MN; daughter Angie (Kirk) Kamin of Mapleton, ND; sons Cordell (Nikki) Melgaard, Owatonna, MN, and Chris (Julia) Bartsch of Cathedral City, CA; six grandchildren; brother David (Beve) Melgaard of Audubon, MN; sister Joann (Jerry) Metzgar of Bottineau, ND; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, and a niece.
