“Since education was not one of the functions delegated to the national government by the United States Constitution, it has remained the basic responsibility of individual states. Washington policy makers could be described as interested and sometimes interfering spectators in the operations of the country’s school systems.”
The preceding paragraph is from an informational booklet entitled “So You Want To Be A School Board Member” prepared and distributed by the North Dakota School Board Association. While there are several district school board seats up for grabs this election year, area school officials say so far no one has thrown their hat in the ring for any available seat.
The Maple Valley School District has four board members up for re-election this year: David Pfau, Shawn Olauson, Darryl Kasowski and Dennis Pautz. However, Maple Valley Schools Superintendent Roger Mulvaney said Monday so far no one has applied to run for the up-for-grabs seats, including the incumbents.
“They have not indicated if they (the incumbents) are going to run,” Mulvaney said.
Maple Valley is not alone in the lack of interest for school board seats.
At Barnes County North, Lori Carlson, Kyle Petersen and Chip Steckler are up for re-election, and have yet to find any opponents.
In Valley City, State House of Representatives hopeful Sharon Buhr’s seat on the Valley City Public School Board is also up for election, but no one has yet challenged Buhr’s board position.
“Nobody’s turned anything in,” said Linda Heit, Valley City Public Schools Business Manager.
Cindy Vogel, Business Manager for the Litchville-Marion School District, also said no one has applied to run against three seats in that district belonging to Kris Karlgaard, Dave Opdahl and Greg Smith.
“Nobody has filed yet,” Vogel said. “The deadline to file is April 6 at 4 p.m.”
Interested applicants can file at either of the Litchville or Marion schools. To file for the Maple Valley School Board or the Valley City School Board, applications are due by 4 p.m. April 13. BCN School Board Applications are due by April 26.
