Annual Decorating Contests Begin

November 28, 2012

Special to the Times-Record The home of Pete and Lori Paulson, 2743 River Road, first place winners in the 2011 annual home decorating contest.

Valley City’s annual home decorating and business decorating contests for the holiday seasons sponsored by the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce have kicked off, said Kay Vinje, office administrator for the Chamber and Valley City-Barnes County Development Corp.

Vinje said Tuesday the Chamber is now asking for nominations for entries in the two contests.

“Anybody can call in and nominate their own home or business or somebody else’s.”

“We (the Chamber) will come up with a list of names” for the Litchville Homemakers group to judge. Judging in both contests will take place Dec. 10 through Dec. 14. The contests have taken place for at least 15 years.

Vinje said no conscious attempt was made to select judges without a personal interest in any particular business or home competing, but she expects having Litchville residents as judges will assure objectivity.

“We looked at having students from the Valley City High School doing it this year, but it didn’t work out. We then talked with the Litchville Homemakers and they were excited about doing it. They plan to make a project of it – coming out early and looking at decorations before dark, having dinner in Valley City, and looking at the nominees again” after dark, Vinje said.

Vinje said anyone with homes or businesses to nominate can call the Chamber at 845-1891.

“If you’re out and about and see something nice, give us a call. Nobody should be intimidated. It’s not necessarily the most lights. Originality counts too,” Vinje said.

Winners of first, second and third place in both the home and business categories will receive a professional photo of the winner “lit up” taken by Dutton’s Valley Gallery, Vinje said.

Last year’s winners of the Home Decorating Contest were: first place, Pete and Lori Paulson, 2743 River Road; second place, Gary and Carmen Yanish, 1057 6th Ave. N.E.; and in third place, Pat and Jordet Schwehr, 158 7 St. N.W.
