Valley City Merchants Win State Championship
The Valley City Merchants won the men’s slow pitch softball Division III (Class D) State Tournament this past weekend in Fargo. The Merchants went 5-0 and allowed only 6 runs in the tournament to win the state title.
They opened the the tournament Saturday by defeating Industrial Electric of Dickinson 10-0, and followed it with a 12-0 win over the Kensal Merchants.
Valley City closed out Saturday with a 5-1 win over Zimney Oil Field Services of Minot 5-1.
In the semi-final game on Sunday, the Merchants shutout Fargo's Liquid Ice/Ken Kraft Agency, a team that had averaged 21 runs per game, in a 10-0 win. In the state championship game, the Merchants defeated Schiele Enterprises of Fargo, 15-5.
Chad Lueck led the team in batting going 11-15 with 2 home runs in the tournament. James Thornton added 3 home runs, and Jason Beilke and Matt Klabo also homered for Valley City. The Merchants also won the Class D Coors Light Early Bird Tournament in Fargo earlier this year and were league champions with a
25-2 record. Sponsors for the team included NuBar, Wendel Auto Body, Agri-Cover, Finley Elevator, Dakota Silver, Brothers III, Leevers Super Valu, and Xtreme Printing.
VCHS Booster Club Registration today
The Valley City Hi-Liner Athletic Booster Club will be welcoming new and renewed memberships during school registration days. Registration takes place at all Valley City Public Schools today from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.
The Hi-Liner Booster Club is a voluntary organization whose main purpose is to support Hi-Liner athletic teams, interscholastic athletics (and activities), to promote a healthy environment, and attitudes for our youth.
Membership is a $25 donation. Participation in projects such as bingo and concession sales is optional. Additional information can be found at www.hilinerboosters.org.
Registration will also take place during the first home football and volleyball events and through the mail.
Ladies Golf at the Country Club
Gigi Goven was the big winner on August 15 in the game of the day "Tic Tac Toe. She had a blackout and shot at or below her handicap on all nine holes.
Coming in second with only one miss were Judy Mathias, Vi Egan and Jan Olafson.
Low scratch went to Mary Tangen with a 50 and low net was Goven with 32.5. Olafson and Goven had low putts with 15.
