Maple Valley boys advance
The Maple Valley boys basketball team advanced to the second round of the Region 1 tournament with a 50-48 win over Lidgerwood-Wyndmere in Fargo.
The Raiders were behind 13-7 at the end of the first quarter but battled back to tie it 22-22 at halftime. The game went back and forth and was tied 38-38 at the end of the third quarter.
Ethen Preston led the Raiders with 15 points, Jordan Haseleu had 14 and Ty Smith had 10.
The Raiders play Central Cass tonight at 7:30 in the tournament semifinal at the Fargo Civic Center.
District 5 girls bracket set
The 2012 District 5 girls basketball tournament bracket was released Monday with Barnes County North seeded third and Litchville-Marion/Montpelier seeded fourth.
The tournament takes place Friday, Saturday and Monday at the Jamestown Civic Center.
LMM will play the first game of the tournament against No. 5 LaMoure starting at 4:30 Friday, which will be followed by No. 2 Pingree-Buchanan/Kensal vs. No. 7 Edgley-Kulm at 6 p.m. and BCN vs. No. 6 Central Prairie at 7:30 p.m.
The eventual championship will be played Monday at 7:30 p.m. The top four teams from the tournament advance to the regional tournament in March.
VCHS gymnasts do well at regional meet
Valley City gymnasts earned multiple honors at the Eastern Dakota Conference regional meet Friday in Wahpeton.
The Hi-Liners took fourth at the meet and senior Molly Willson was named to the All-Conference team. Additionally, coach Carina Roehrich was named EDC coach of the year.
At the meet, the Hi-Liners had three all-around placers. Willson took seventh place with a 32.8, Taylor Johnson took 8th with 32.775 and Brienne Roehrich took ninth with 32.475.
On the bars, Willson took fourth with a score of 8.375, Roehrich took fifth with 8.275 and Abby Brown took ninth with 7.95.
Johnson was the only Hi-Liner to place on the beam with a score of 8.4 for sixth place and tied for ninth on the floor with an 8.7. Roehrich tied for 11th on the floor with an 8.6.
The Hi-Liners have the state meet in Dickinson this weekend.
The whole team will be competing Friday night in the team competition and will have three gymnasts competing individually Saturday. Willson will be competing on the beam and the bars, Roehrich will be on floor and bars, and Johnson will be on the floor.
Hi-Liners hooping tonight
The Valley City High School boys will finish their regular season tonight at Fargo Shanley. The VCHS girls are at home tonight against Shanley in their second to last game of the year.
In both cases, JV plays at 6 p.m. with varsity at 7:30 p.m.
VCHS baseball loses two
The Valley City State University baseball team lost its first two games of the year in a doubleheader with the University of Minnesota — Crookston at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis.
The Vikings were shutout 5-0 in the first game and had only four hits, two from first baseman Brenden Shearer. The Vikings were hurt in the field by four errors, which resulted in only one earned run against pitcher Taylor Nelson, who pitched five and two thirds of an inning.
The Vikings struggled with errors in the second game as well and lost 5-4 to UMC.
The Vikings fell behind early in the game, but tied it 4-4 after scoring two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Vikings lost it with an allowed run in the bottom of the seventh and finished the game with five errors. Right fielder Preston Jensen went 2-4 and had two RBI.
