Horseshoe Championships to the Operating Table

The last three weeks have been a busy time for Wilbur Gabel.

First up, three weeks ago Wilbur won the State Elders Singles Championship in Horseshoes for the third consecutive year, then last weekend he and his Grandson Noah teamed up to win the State Class A Doubles Championship.

Noah also won his fourth State Cadet Singles Championship the week before.

TOO TOUGH: Schlect, Sargent Central Sweep Maple Valley

Maple Valley trailed by no more than six until the third set Tuesday night in Tower City, but Sargent Central’s defense kept their side of the court cleaner and handed the Raiders their first loss, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-16).

SNAPPED: Wahpeton Sticks Hi-Liner Junior Varsity with 1st Loss in 3 Years

When all else fails, throw it to Levi Nix.

Nix, the 6-foot, 4-inch sophomore quarterback, climbed the ladder, split two defenders at the 15-yard line and danced into the end zone in Wahpeton on Monday night, but Husky 5-foot, 9-inch sophomore quarterback Tyler Breuer and all his rowdy friends handed the junior varsity Hi-Liners their first loss in three years, 42-6.

“I don’t think they were that much better than us,” Hi-Liner coach Jim Breckheimer said. “But the wheels fell off.”

“They took us out of our gameplan,” Valley City coach Ty Allen said.

FOOTBALL: Grafton's Stand Cuts Hi-Liners Short

Power running met air attacks as Nate Rodriguez and AA No. 5 Valley City opened East Region action on the road against Zak Hernandez and Grafton on Friday, but defense made the difference in the end.

Up 20-14 late in the fourth quarter, Grafton held on a goal line stand for the upset.

Eli Allen’s five-yard first quarter touchdown run completed a 70-yard drive. Hernandez’s two-yard run tied it at 6-6, but Rodriguez’s rushing touchdown and Cody Halverson’s two-point catch in the second quarter put Valley City up 14-6.

Junior Varsity Girls 2nd at Fargo North Meet

Saturday’s meet in Fargo turned into a major gathering of Eastern Dakota Conference powers and other schools from Minnesota and North Dakota. It was good preparation for EDC [Regionals], which will be coming in only four weeks.

Solid performances were turned in by several Hi-Liners; tough competition, cool weather and a flat course led to several personal-best times. Every one of the Hi-Liner boys competing had a PR for [his] respective distance. Several of the girls had their best times of the season.

TITANIC CLASH: Trinity Crashes Central Dakota's Homecoming for 1st Win in 2 Years

It was Central Dakota’s Homecoming in Cooperstown on Friday, but Dickinson Trinity’s night.

Five-foot, 10-inch, 160-pound senior running back Coltyn Nelson picked up 157 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries as Trinity scored their first win — in the AA West as well as in general — in two years, 27-0.

Valley City hosted Fargo Davies on Thursday as Eagle experience prevailed in an 8-1 Eastern Dakota Conference match.

STILL STANDING: Maple Valley Sweeps Enderlin, Stays Unbeaten

Enderlin’s Eagles fly, but Maple Valley’s Raiders soar.

Thursday’s District 2-opening duel between two rivals separated by 36 miles had even less separation through three sets, but Raider resilience kept Maple Valley on top for a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-17) RaiderDome sweep.

Maple Valley opened the first set up 16-13 and held on.

Enderlin jumped out 7-6 in the second, but leads of 16-12 and 23-18 gave Maple Valley the win.

An 11-11 tie started the third set, but Raider leads of 20-15 and 22-17 sparked the sweeping 25-17 win.

Larson, LMM Fall to Midkota

Senior outside hitter Rhandi Larson swooped for 11 digs, four aces, two kills and an assist at District 5 rival Midkota on Tuesday, but Litchville-Marion/Montpelier fell, 3-0.

Cheyanne Elsner was on the defensive with eight digs, four kills and an ace, Jacey Alber four kills, three digs, three blocks, an ace and an assist, Morgan Gentzkow six digs, four assists and an ace, Tierra Velure six digs, two aces and an assist, Caitlin Miedema five digs, Danielle Eichele four digs and an assist, Morgan Smith two aces and a dig.
