October 20, 2014

Bismarck St. Mary’s 6-foot, 165-pound senior tailback Dillon Reiner ran 47 times for 211 yards and six touchdowns against AA West rival Central Dakota in Cooperstown on Saturday to give the No. 1 Saints a 42-12 win.

Dakota Straub’s one-yard touchdown run put the Titans ahead 6-0 in the first quarter before Reiner scored from six yards out to lead 7-6 after a quarter.

Reiner ran for touchdowns of five and four yards in the second quarter and St. Mary’s led 21-6 at halftime.

RUNNING DOWN A DREAM: Valley City Faces Central Cass for 4th Seed Friday

October 20, 2014

It’s do or die Friday night at Hanna Field when third-place Valley City hosts fifth-place Central Cass for the fourth and final AA East playoff spot.

Nate Rodriguez carried 17 times for 48 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Saturday night’s penultimate game at No. 2 Fargo Shanley, but senior running back Daniel Stasch, senior wide receiver Trevian Fort and the host Deacons denied Valley City a playoff-clinching win, 40-13.

“[Shanley]’s a dang good team, and we’re not so dang bad either,” said Hi-Liner head coach Scott Roehrich, eager for Friday’s one-game season.

Blue Team Wins Hi-Liner Challenge

October 15, 2014

April Berntson realized a life-long dream of ending up on the Hi-Liner Challenge’s winning side Wednesday as she and the Blue defeated the White, 41-32 by virtue of combined times, at Valley City’s National Fish Hatchery, a final tune-up before Oct. 25’s State Meet in Minot.

“A good time was had by all, but not so much for the disgruntled White Team,” head coach Brian Engelhard said.

October 15, 2014

Edgeley-Kulm 5-foot, 6-inch junior libero Baylee Berg put the Rebels on her back with 35 assists and 29 digs in trading sets at Barnes County North on Tuesday night, but Jayda Haugen’s 32 assists, 11 digs, two aces and a block helped the Bison secure the 3-2 (25-20, 18-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-6) District 5 win.

A FINAL DEFENSE: Shanley Junior Varsity's Pair of Late Stands Tops Hi-Liners

October 15, 2014

Turnover can be good for business, but not if your business is football.

Fargo Shanley ended five Hi-Liner drives with takeaways and lost a pair of fumbles at Hanna Field on Tuesday night, but it took a Deacon interception with 1:30 left in the fourth quarter to truly finish the Hi-Liners, 20-14.

“It hurts me too because you played your hearts out,” said Hi-Liner coach John Cunningham, who insisted that the superior team did not come out on top. “I want to play these guys again right now — if this doesn’t motivate you for Saturday, I don’t know what does.”

ROUGH TOUGH RAIDERS: Maple Valley Outclasses Park Christian

October 14, 2014

Sometimes volleyball comes down to making fewer mistakes, as was the case Monday night when North Dakota Class B Maple Valley, the pride of Tower City, N.D., home to fewer than 300 people, hosted 6A Park Christian of Moorhead, Minn., a city of just over 39,000.

Maple Valley and Park Christian traded the first two sets, but Raider resilience came through to take the final two back-and-forth sets, 3-1 (25-14, 19-25, 25-19, 25-23).
