There are times in baseball where an error plays little role in the outcome of a game.
But for the Valley City Babe Ruth team, that wasn’t the case in a 5-4 loss in the first game of a double header sweep to LaMoure Thursday at Charlie Brown Memorial Field. Valley City also lost 3-1 in a three inning second game.

Post 60 gets swept
The Valley City Post 60 American Legion baseball struggled offensively Monday and was swept by Kindred.
The team was only able to put together four total hits in the two games despite strong efforts from pitchers Chase Carpenter and Brett Stearns.
Valley City lost the first game 3-0. Kindred scored one run in the second, fourth and fifth innings.
Carpenter threw all six innings with only four hits allowed and eight strikeouts. He also went 1-2 at the plate. Anthony Olstad had Post 60’s only other hit.

VC Babe Ruth splits with Oakes

July 10, 2012

Valley City Babe Ruth player Jacob Miller showed plenty of tenacity in Monday’s double header split with Oakes.
As his team played the first game, a 4-2 loss, he donned the catcher’s gear and took his spot behind the plate for all seven innings in 90 degree weather.
He followed it by switching battery positions for game two, where he pitched all four innings and scored two runs in a 5-1 win.
In both instances, coach Lance Lukes was pleased as the team readies for the District 6 tournament later this month in Steele.

Post 60 rebounds well after big HR in sweep of Lidgerwood

July 9, 2012

There isn’t much that can change a baseball game’s momentum more than a big home run.
But after allowing a two-run game-tying dinger to deep centerfield in the third inning of the team’s second game with Lidgerwood Friday at Charlie Brown Memorial Field, Valley City Post 60 pitcher Austen Meyer was determined to keep his chin up.
“You’ve just got to come back and get the next guy,” Meyer said.
Instead, he and the rest of his team responded in the best way possible.

Johnson's cycle leads Babe Ruth past Edgeley (plus local digest)

July 4, 2012

The Valley City Babe Ruth baseball team offense was a bit more sluggish in its first game Monday than coach Lance Lukes would have liked it to be, but later recovered for the second game of a double header with Lisbon.
But in Tuesday’s 20-2 district win in Edgeley, there were no early jitters.
The team put together at least three runs in each inning, ending the game after five, and had 15 total hits.
“It’s always tough coming from a game like Monday,” Lukes said. “There can be times where players get set in looking for the walks and stop being aggressive at the plate.”

Solid pitching gets Babe Ruth past Lisbon

July 3, 2012

When times get tough for Valley City Babe Ruth pitcher Nate Rodriguez, his main goal is to avoid getting in a rut mentally.
“What (head coach) Lance (Lukes) always tells me is to keep my head up and keep it clear,” Rodriguez said.
It was an outlook that came in handy in an 11-1 win Monday in the first game of a double header sweep over Lisbon.
After getting the first three batters out in succession, Rodriguez finished the next three innings with the bases loaded for the final out, but allowed only one run to score.

The Catch: Plattner picks the MLB All Star teams, part 1

July 3, 2012

Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game is July 10th and the rosters are set. Each year, comparing my All-Stars with the actual rosters is fun and interesting. No sense in wasting any time. Having not looked at the rosters yet, we’ll begin with my National League All-Star team. After revealing my team, we’ll scope out the real All-Star team, compare and contrast, I’ll defend my picks, and we’ll do the same for the American League (which will be the topic of discussion next week). All stats used are as of games completed through June 30, 2012.
