Post 60 splits double header with Great Bend, Wahpeton

June 24, 2012

The Valley City Post 60 American Legion baseball team plays plenty of double headers throughout its season, but Thursday’s home games at Charlie Brown Memorial Field had a slight twist on the formula.
Rather than playing one opponent twice, Post 60 beat Great Bend 6-2, then immediately played Wahpeton in a 12-0 loss.
“It’s kind of like playing in a tournament,” said Valley City coach Jason Beilke. “It’s two games in a row with two different teams.”
The two games, both of which were rescheduled from earlier in the season, ended up being played differently.

Vikings not interested in trading Harvin

June 20, 2012

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman says they have no interest in trading star receiver Percy Harvin.
Spielman spoke Wednesday afternoon a few hours after word spread that Harvin had requested a trade. Harvin lashed out Tuesday, saying he was unhappy with several issues on the team, but did not specify what was bothering him.
Harvin has two years left on his rookie contract. He was at the Vikings' mandatory minicamp practice Wednesday morning but did not speak to reporters.

The Catch: Things things to hate about Miami's no. 6

June 19, 2012

Wondering what topic to write about this week, I found myself sitting around a campfire at a friend’s lake cabin Friday night. As the twelve of us visited and bounced from topic to topic, the mood was very laid back, as you would expect from a weekend at the cabin. And then one person’s name was brought up, causing the calm, laid back chatter to suddenly turn serious and defensive.
That name was LeBron James.

Babe Ruth takes 6th in own tourney

June 17, 2012

The Valley City Babe Ruth baseball team didn’t necessarily play badly in its final game of the annual Pizza Corner Classic.
The problem in its 10-0 loss to Steele afternoon was that a few unlucky breaks added up and left the team with a 6th place finish in its own tournament.
The two-day tournament wrapped up Sunday at Charlie Brown Memorial Field and featured teams from southwestern North Dakota.
“We had a snowball effect,” said coach Lance Lukes. “We made a mistake, we made another one after that, and it led to a big inning for them.”

Pitching struggles in Post 60's home opening loss

June 15, 2012

The Valley City Post 60 American Legion baseball team tried plenty of different players on the pitcher’s mound in Thursday’s double header losses to Kindred.
But no matter who was there, the problem was virtually the same — the pitchers struggled to find early strikes and later walked batters after falling behind in counts.
“Leading with the strike and getting ahead right away is big in baseball,” coach Jason Beilke said. “When you’re ahead 0-1, it’s a lot easier than being behind 1-0.”
