Homecoming win boosts VCHS to top of region

September 30, 2012

Of all the games a football team plays each year, there is rarely a non-playoff matchup that draws a crowd better than a homecoming game. But in the same vein, all excitement of the weekend comes with the possibility of distracting players.
But in Friday night's 40-13 homecoming win over Lisbon, the Valley City High School football team showed that it was all business.

MV Volleyball Swept By Kindred

September 28, 2012

Entering Thursday's match with Kindred, the Maple Valley High School volleyball team knew one of the Vikings' biggest threats was going to be Kellie Schmit.
"She's a very good player," Maple Valley coach Jessica Theurer said. "We just had to do our best to attack so they couldn't set her up."
It was a strategy that worked at times, but wasn't quite as potent as the Raiders hoped in their 25-15, 25-21, 25-13 loss to Kindred.

Even though the high school volleyball season has been in session for just over a month, Valley City High School's schedule had yet to match the Hi-Liners up against a team that brought the ball a bit harder than normal.
That was until Tuesday, when the Hi-Liners struggled at times to close the gap in a 25-20, 25-16, 25-20 loss to West Fargo in front of a loud student section at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.

September 25, 2012

Before the Valley City High School tennis team took the court in Monday's Eastern Dakota Conference tournament play-in match with Wahpeton Monday, the players on the team had a meeting by themselves.
It was a meeting that senior Ricky Paulson admitted got him a little emotional, as he thought about what could be the seniors' last match. But by the end, the Hi-Liners were all business.
"We knew what we had to get done," Paulson said.
Get it done, they did, as the Hi-Liners swept Wahpeton 5-0 to advance to the EDC regional team tournament Thursday in Grand Forks.

"It is priceless, it is," coach Brett Kapaun said after receiving hugs from parents who traveled hours to the game. "What does 'beyond feel pretty good' sound like?"

TOWER CITY — As the season has progressed for the Valley City High School volleyball team, sophomore Clarissa Olson has found herself in a variety of spots on the court.
But she's making the most of it, coming up with key kills up front but also getting crucial digs to help out defensively.
"She is coming around so much," Valley City coach Katy Van Dyke said. "She's young and she's been told what she needs to do. ... She soaks up that information and she uses it, then goes out there and does it."
