Early nerves cost VCHS in loss to West Fargo

May 10, 2012

In the first inning of their 11-2 loss to West Fargo Tuesday at the Valley City State University softball complex, the girls of the Valley City High School softball team were almost too eager to be taking on the top team in the Eastern Dakota Conference.
From the get-go the Hi-Liners were leaping for liners, diving for shallow flies, but without much luck.
It wasn’t until they settled down that things started working.
“Confidence is all we need to work on,” said Valley City assistant coach Erika Calkins. “We’re starting to get there and we’re starting to improve.”

VCHS softball ready to host EDC's elite (plus Tuesday local digest)

May 8, 2012

The West Fargo High School softball team is, simply, among the elite softball teams locally.
"They're pretty much undefeated in North Dakota for two years now, at least," Valley City High School coach Jason Lindgren. "I bet they don't have five losses all together in those two years."
It's a record that could strike fear into many opponents, but will be a welcome challenge against the Hi-Liners Tuesday when the teams play a one-point game at 4:30 p.m. at the Valley City State University softball complex.

Hi-Liners take 3rd at home tournament

May 8, 2012

With plenty of games played in a short time, tournaments have a way of testing teams.
So by the end of the Valley City Junior High Invitational softball tournament, the hosting Hi-Liners were simply drained.
“We played right away at 9 a.m., then we had an hour off,” Valley City coach Lucas Potter said. “After that it was one game we won, another game we won, so by the time that third game hits, what are you going to do?”

The Valley City junior varsity track teams were in Fargo Thursday for the Davies Junior Varsity Invitational.
The boys finished in fifth place at the meet and the girls took third.

Junior high baseball team shows character in split with Fargo South

May 8, 2012

In a doubleheader split with Fargo South Thursday, the Valley City Junior High baseball team had plenty of reasons it could have gotten down on itself.
For one, until the Hi-Liners had a walk-off hit to win the first game 4-3 in six innings, they never held a lead.
Then, in the second game, the team allowed six runs in the top of the first inning.
But in both situations, the Hi-Liners simply kept swinging the bat, playing defense, and generally having fun.
The result were two close games — a 5-3 win in six innings, and a 9-6 loss.
