Bestin' the West: VCHS beats Top-Seeded Bishop Ryan in AA Playoffs

October 28, 2012

MINOT — All year long, the Valley City High School football team proved it could play with the best teams in the AA East, losing by only six points to Shanley High School eight points to Grafton, the top two playoff seeds from the East.
For that reason, the team felt pretty confident entering Saturday's quarterfinal playoff game with Bishop Ryan, the top seed in the AA West region.

VCSU Football Gets 2nd Shutout of Season

October 28, 2012

The Valley City State University recovered from last weekend's loss to Jamestown with a 27-0 win over at Lindenwood University — Belleville Saturday in Belleville, Ill.
It was the second shutout of the year for the Vikings, who beat Gustavus Adolphus 16-0 earlier this month.
The Vikings got on the board early following a pass interception at their own 49-yard line. On the ensuing drive, VCSU took the ball 51 yards, losing a few yards early, but making up for it with a 54-yard pass from Tommy Zinke to Colby Lum.

VCSU Volleyball Loses Home Finale
The Valley City State University volleyball team split weekend matches, beating Dakota State 3-0 Friday in Jamestown, but losing 3-0 to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Saturday in the team's home finale.
Friday, VCSU beat the Trojans 25-17, 28-26, 27-25 at Jamestown College. The teams played relatively evenly, but VCSU found plenty of points from the serve, finishing with 13 aces, including four from Stephanie Miller.

BCN, LMM Lose District Openers

October 26, 2012

ELLENDALE — As the Litchville-Marion/Montpelier volleyball team prepared for the postseason, coach Ryan Nelson decided to change things up and had his team change its coverage of the floor. But in game situations, it can take a bit for the changes to kick it.
When the Rebels opened the Class B District 5 tournament Thursday in Ellendale, there was a bit of delay as the team made the adjustments in its coverage, but once they were comfortable, even a casual observer could have noted the difference.

Denholm's All-Around Effort Leads Hi-Liners Past Bruins

October 24, 2012

On the Valley City High School volleyball roster, junior Jessica Denholm is listed simply as a setter. It's not only her primary position, but one that she's plenty experienced at.
But, as Fargo South found out in the Hi-Liners' 27-25, 25-21, 25-16 win Tuesday at the Hi-Liner Activity Center, labels can be misleading.
Denholm not only put together 28 assists for Valley City but also provided seven kills and 1.5 blocks up front, six aces from the service line, and seven digs around the court.
"How about those blocks she had?" Valley City coach Katy Van Dyke said after the match.

Viking Club Tennis Struggles at UW Stout

October 23, 2012

The Valley City State University club tennis team had a shot at clinching a spot at the USTA National tournament over the weekend in Menominee, Wis., but struggled to get the wins it needed to.
The Vikings competed in the University of Wisconsin — Stout USTA Tennis-On-Campus tournament, and a win would have vaulted the team over North Dakota State University in the standings to clinch a spot for the national tournament in March.

MVE Upset in Division A Opening Round

October 22, 2012

BUFFALO — By no means are the players on Maple Valley/Enderlin "small".
But when they stood face to face with Park River/Forville-Lankin running back Chad Jelinek Saturday in Buffalo during the first round of the Division A playoffs, it sure seemed like it at times.
Jelinek, a senior, is listed at 192 pounds, but also stands at 6-foot-3-inches tall.
It was size he used to his team's advantage Saturday as he played the role of a power back, pushing the ball up the field in a 24-20 upset of the No. 1 seeded Falcons.

Jimmies Take Back Paintbucket Trophy

October 22, 2012

The way Valley City State University football coach Dennis McCulloch saw it, his team didn't have just one issue in Saturday's 13-10 home loss to Jamestown College, it had plenty.
"We had problems with the gap, and getting to the second level," McCulloch said. "We had problems with a lot of things."
The Jimmies, who lost earlier this season on their own turf, took the coveted Paint Bucket trophy back to Jamestown for the first time in four games. They hadn't won the trophy since the teams met in 2010.

VCHS Cross County Braves Weather for Hi-Liner Challenge

October 18, 2012

As the Valley City High School cross country team waited to start its third annual Hi-Liner Challenge race at Chautauqua Park Thursday, VCHS coach Brian Engelhard took note of the weather conditions.
Compared to the warmth that filled Valley City Tuesday, Wednesday's races were run in temperatures in the mid-40s, underneath the overcast and drizzling skies that lingered throughout the day.
"Welcome to the third annual Coach Knows How To Pick 'Em Day," Engelhard told the crowd of runners and parents at the starting line.

Shanley's Passing Ruins GBC Season Finale

October 18, 2012

FARGO — As the Griggs/Barnes County football team walked off the field at Shanley High School's Cichy Stadium Tuesday, the looks on the faces of the players nearly said it all.
As the Titans gave each other a hug and a handshake, seniors seemed to be holding back tears following a 47-15 loss to the Deacons in their final game of the season.
It was a loss that, though large on the scoreboard, left second-year coach Davy Zinke plenty happy as the team continued its improvements this season.
