Men's Day Heats Up

Valley City Town and Country Club held their Men’s Day on July 17 as temperatures were on the rise. The Longest Putt of the Day, sponsored by Bank Forward, went to Jamie Wirth. The Pizza Ranch Closest to the Pin contest on Hole 2 was won by Doug Bergan. TJ Hansen claimed the prize on Hole 3 for Closest Shot Outside of 50 Yards, sponsored by the Valley City Town and Country Club. Club veteran Kerry Anderson continued his fine play and won the Closest Second Shot contest on Hole 4, sponsored by Taco John’s.

Fargo/Moorhead Ousts Valley City 16U at Northern Championships

Valley City 16U softball’s Northern Championship campaign concluded on Friday in Bismarck, N.D., with a five-inning 11-0 loss to Pool A’s No. 1 and to-be champion Brookings, S.D. Outlaws and a 9-3 defeat to Pool B’s No. 2 Fargo/Moorhead Blaze.

Brookings led 2-0 through an inning, 9-0 after two with the help of a three-RBI swing, and 10-0 through three. Valley City loaded the bases in the fifth but could not convert.

Carrington Knocks Out Babe Ruth

District 6 champion Valley City Babe Ruth’s back-and-forth State Tournament concluded Sunday with a 12-6 loss to District 2 champion Carrington after Friday’s 7-5 marquee comeback win over host District 2’s Sheyenne-New Rockford and Saturday’s hitless five-inning 19-2 drubbing at the hands of District 3 kings Park River.

State wraps up with Monday’s 1 p.m. championship game or a 3:30 p.m. title match if necessary.

Velva Boots Post 60 in Semifinals

If you’re here for the party, don’t leave until they throw you out, especially not until you’ve taken on the eventual Class A State champion and runner-up.

Legion Post 60’s clock struck midnight over the weekend as East No. 1 and State Tournament host Wahpeton took Friday’s four-inning 10-0 quarterfinal before West No. 4 Velva turned out the lights, 15-1, in Saturday’s five-inning consolation semifinal.

The Raven/Eagles ‘Dirty Birds’ defeated Boomers Corner Keg, 9-2, in Monday’s quarterfinals, Captain’s Pub, 9-7, in Monday’s semifinal, and John Deere Seeding, 14-3, in Tuesday’s championship.

16U Opens Northern Nationals

Valley City 16U softball endured a rough Thursday of pool play at the Northern National Championship in Bismarck, N.D., falling 14-0 in four innings to the Dakota Fury of Sioux Falls, S.D., and 12-2 to Muscoda’s Wisconsin Xplozion.

Such results, however, can serve as tune-ups for Friday’s tournament.

Nothin' But a No. 4 Seed Thang: Post 60 Beats Watford City, Reaches State Quarterfinals

Upsets are unexpected for an East No. 4 seed, but Legion Post 60’s filling that demand.

Valley City, on the roll that head coach Kyle Roelfsema envisioned entering Regionals in Grafton, N.D., took down a second paper giant in as many days on Thursday at the Class A State Tournament in Wahpeton, N.D.

A day after overthrowing West No. 1 Beulah, 10-8, despite trailing 7-3 through a frame, Post 60 put up five runs in Thursday’s first to beat West No. 3 Watford City, 7-4.

East No. 4 seed Legion Post 60 opened Wednesday’s Class A State Tournament at John Randall Field in Wahpeton, N.D. in comeback fashion.

Up 3-0 halfway through the first inning and down 7-3 to end it, Post 60 reclaimed an 8-7 lead in the fifth and held on for a 10-8 upset of West No. 1 Beulah.

“It was frickin’ awesome,” said Jordan Magnuson, who batted 1-for-3 with a run, a walk and an RBI.

Post 60 takes on West No. 3 Watford City, who beat East No. 2 Grafton, 10-6, Thursday at 5 p.m., broadcasted on 1490 AM KOVC and online at newsdakota.com.

National Anthem Girl Coming to North Dakota

Janine Stange, known as ‘National Anthem Girl’ for her mission to sing “The Star Spangled Banner” in every state by Sept. 14 to honor national heroes and the song’s 200th anniversary, will check North Dakota, her 44th state, off the list by performing at Aug. 5’s 7:02 p.m. Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks game.
