Babe Ruth Rallies for Sweep at Lisbon

June 16, 2014

Valley City Babe Ruth beat Lisbon twice on the road Thursday night, coming back from a 9-5 fourth-inning deficit for a nine-inning 12-9 District win and surviving a three-run third frame in the 6-3 non-District finisher.

“We didn’t come out playing our best,” Valley City head coach Lance Lukes said. “We were just kind of going through the motions and not putting anything really into it. We left too many runners on base and didn’t execute some of the little things that we need to be doing.”

Carrington Takes Pizza Corner Crown

June 16, 2014

Drew Oberlander’s third-inning single had Valley City Babe Ruth up 3-2 in Sunday’s Pizza Corner Classic championship, but Carrington’s two-run single in the fourth sparked an 8-4 trophy triumph.

“We didn’t play our best baseball and, when you’re playing a good team like Carrington, if you don’t play well, you won’t beat a good team,” Valley City head coach Lance Lukes said. “We made too many mistakes
out there: fielding errors, throwing errors, pitching errors, and Carrington, being the good team they are, took advantage of them.”

Devils Lake Breaks Away Late

June 13, 2014

Chase Carpenter allowed only three hits through seven innings and Jake Miller struck down runner after runner at the plate Thursday night, but Devils Lake scored three runs on two seventh-inning Legion Post 60 errors to turn a 1-0 lead into a 4-0 District win.

Devils Lake continued in the non-District follow-up for a 12-3 margin.

Jenson, Babe Ruth Blank Edgeley, 18-0

June 11, 2014

Sam Jenson pitched Valley City Babe Ruth’s second no-hitter in as many games and led the offense in Tuesday night’s 18-0, 19-hit District win over host Edgeley.

“Again we had another great pitching performance,” Valley City head coach Lance Lukes said. “Jenson improved from his last outing and found some things that worked and kept up with them. Our offense came out little sluggish in the first two innings; we talked and changed our approach and rattled off base hit after base hit. It’s always nice to put up that many hits in a game.”

Twins' Kids Camps in Enderlin June 21

June 10, 2014

The Minnesota Twins offer free youth baseball and softball clinics at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 21 at Hendrickson Field, 205 Grand Avenue in Enderlin, N.D., or — in the case of inclement weather — at Enderlin High School Gymnasium, 407 Bluff Street.

Clinics, focusing on hitting, fielding and throwing, are open to boys and girls from six to 16 years of age, and are divided into two 90-minute sessions, the first for 6- to 9-year-olds and the second for 10- to 16-year-olds. Parents are encouraged to participate.

Babe Ruth Sweeps Oakes

June 10, 2014

Drew Oberlander drove home five runs and scored two more in Monday’s 16-2 five-inning District win over Oakes, then Riley Miller’s two-walk, four-strikeout no-hitter highlighted a three-inning 12-0 non-District nightcap.

“It was great to see the boys aggressive early in the contest,” Valley City head coach Lance Lukes said. “Riley did what has become expected of Riley to do: he just pitched strikes and let our defense help him out.”

Jamestown Storms Babe Ruth

June 9, 2014

Jamestown took the first of Friday’s non-conference games from Valley City Babe Ruth at Charlie Brown Field before the second contest, tied 3-3 in the third inning, was cut short due to rain.

Valley City led 2-0 after two innings in the primer but came up with only three hits. Jamestown scored five runs in the third and nine in the fourth — most unearned despite serviceable Valley City pitching — to close out the game in four innings.

Rylee Bjork picked up two hits and a run while pitching three innings on five hits, seven runs allowed, four walks and five strikeouts.
