Knights Serve Hi-Liners

Valley City tennis looked to make progress when they hit the road for their Eastern Dakota Conference match at Grand Forks Central on Tuesday.

Central took the match 9-0, but Hi-Liner coach Matt Nielson definitely sees improvement.

Nielson noted that Valley City's No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams both lost by a tie-breaker and a break. The No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles teams fell by a break each set.

Valley City State Invitational Friday

Valley City State University kicks off its 2013 cross country campaign when it hosts the first meet of the season on Friday, Aug. 30.

The VCSU Invitational will take place at the Valley City Country Club and will feature a handful of area teams.

The college women will run a 4K race beginning at 4 p.m. The college men will wrap up the meet with a 5K race starting at about 4:30 p.m. Junior varsity and varsity high school races beginning at 2 p.m.

Hi-Liner Tennis Hosts Conference Opener

Valley City High tennis faced Fargo South Friday in Valley for the Eastern Dakota Conference opening match, with the Bruins taking the day, 8-1.

"We are making strides as a team," Hi-Liners coach Matt Nielson said. "I would not have been able to say any match last year that everyone gave 100 percent."

VCSU Competes at Red Raider Classic

A weekend of tough matches started just that way Friday for Valley City State volleyball.

The Vikings dropped a pair of three-game matches at the Northwestern College Red Raider Classic, falling to both Morningside and Dordt College on Friday.

Morningside defeated the Vikings 25-21, 25-11 and 25-16. Dordt College, an NAIA Top 25 Poll team, knocked off the Vikings 25-10, 25-18 and 25-18.

Alley Theroux and Kelsey Labodi led the Viking attack with 11 kills each between the two matches.

Heat Alters Hi-Liner Sports Schedules

High regional temperatures have forced Valley City High School athletics to adjust its fall sports schedule for the safety of its student athletes, but no activities have been cancelled.

Precautions include moving practices to mornings or late evenings to avoid the observed high heat indexes of the day, changing the start time of competitions to avoid daytime highs, modifying the length of outside practices, moving junior high volleyball practices from the north and south gyms to the Hi-Liner Activity Center.

Hi-Liner Girls Take 3rd in Jamestown

The Valley City High School cross country season was off to a hot start at the Jamestown "Orr"iginals Cross Country Meet at Centennial Forest Course, with temperatures in the high 80’s and humidity to match. The young Hi-Liners performed well in the overall competition of 15 teams, especially with many appearing in their first-ever meet.

Bull Bash Benefits Sauer Family

The Second Annual Andrea Arbuckle Memorial Shootout and Ride the Hide Benefit Bull Bash on Aug. 24 in Litchville showcased local bull riding talent and hosted a silent auction to come to the aid of the Mike Sauer family of Valley City.

Litchville natives Tate and Taryl Smith competed in the Bull Bash in memory of their cousin Annie Arbuckle.

Bull Bash Returns Tomorrow

Litchville native Tate Smith has organized the 2nd Annual Ride the Hide Bull Bash, to be followed by the Andrea "Annie" Arbuckle Memorial Shootout, on Aug. 24 in Litchville.

A street dance, sponsored by Uncle Dean's Tavern and the Bull Bash, and featuring the Dickinson-based band Outlaw Sippin', will follow the shootout. The Bull Bach will also feature a silent auction for the benefit of the Sauer family.

VCSU Football Gets Back to Business

The late August sun hung over the northwest corner of Shelly Ellig Field for Valley City State's Red-vs.-White, open two-quarter running-clock scrimmage on Aug. 22.

Scores were left uncounted because the scrimmage was to be a showcase of Viking talent.

Freshman Kurtis Walls came in first at quarterback for the White team.
