Vikings Sweep Cougars

January 6, 2013

The Valley City State University mens basketball team has spent the entire season adapting to the injuries sustained by various team members.
Friday, in the team's 78-67 win over NCAA Division III's University of Minnesota — Morris, the Vikings were short their tall post player Gus Kuebler, who isn't injured, but had the night off as the team readies for a key stretch of the season.
With Kuebler out of the lineup, VCSU coach Jeff Kaminsky encouraged his guards to help grab rebounds, and more than anyone, senior John Raquel responded.

Top Sports Stories of 2012

January 3, 2013

Editor's note: 2012 was my first full calendar year as a staff member of the Times-Record, and what a year it was. Barnes County saw championships on both the state and national levels, and even the teams that fell just short gave fans a heck of a ride. Although there were too many sports stories to choose from, I worked with other members of the editorial staff to choose this list of 10 biggest happenings in local sports from the last year. With any abbreiviated list, there is sure to be a bit of disagreement.

VCHS boys vs. Jamestown

Last season, the Valley City High School boys basketball team couldn’t get a win over a Class A opponent.
But the Hi-Liners broke the streak in style with an 81-51 win over Jamestown at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.
The Hi-Liners used a solid defensive effort to go up 36-16 at halftime and never let up from there, getting the lead as high as 78-41 with about five minutes left to play.

As the members of the Valley City High School girls basketball team left their locker room Friday night at the Hi-Liner Activity Center, many of the Hi-Liners seemed almost euphoric.
The girls' win 60-58 win over No. 4 Jamestown High School moved the Hi-Liners to 5-0 this season and leaves the Hi-Liners as one of the two remaining undefeated Class A teams in the state.

Hi-Liners' 2nd Half Rally Not Enough vs. West Fargo

December 19, 2012

When the Valley City High School basketball team left the floor for halftime of its 65-54 loss to West Fargo, things seemed somewhat bleak. The Hi-Liners trailed 38-19, allowing double the points they had scored.
But that didn't stop the team from making it a game, as the Hi-Liners scored 13 points in the first six minutes of the second half and limited the Packers' opportunities to get the game within reach.
"The kids came out and played extremely hard in the second half and played defense and we were able to make it a game," VCHS coach Scott Hurlimann said.

For the first 40 minutes of Valley City High School girls basketball team's 63-53 win over Maple Valley Tuesday at the Hi-Liner Activity Center, the Hi-Liners had little trouble finding a good shot.
But, for whatever reason, the team's numerous open looks wouldn't make the short trip off the backboard and through the hoop.
"We had good shot selection and good shooting opportunities the entire game, but it took us a while to get where we could consistently hit some," Valley City coach Jim McDaniel said.
