Nothin' But a No. 4 Seed Thang: Post 60 Beats Watford City, Reaches State Quarterfinals

August 1, 2014

Upsets are unexpected for an East No. 4 seed, but Legion Post 60’s filling that demand.

Valley City, on the roll that head coach Kyle Roelfsema envisioned entering Regionals in Grafton, N.D., took down a second paper giant in as many days on Thursday at the Class A State Tournament in Wahpeton, N.D.

A day after overthrowing West No. 1 Beulah, 10-8, despite trailing 7-3 through a frame, Post 60 put up five runs in Thursday’s first to beat West No. 3 Watford City, 7-4.

Post 60 Holds off Harvey for State Seed

July 25, 2014

Up 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Harvey Post 28’s Shawn Kourajian on second and Trevor Schimke on third in Thursday’s Class A East Regional opener, Chase Carpenter struck out Brian Fike on three straight pitches for the save, a matchup with top seed Wahpeton and a guaranteed spot in July 30’s State Tournament in Wahpeton, N.D.

“We rolled in like conquistadors,” said Legion Post 60 assistant coach Erick Counts of Post 60’s marauding spirit coming into Regionals. “[Valley City head coach Kyle] Roelfsema shaved his mustache like a conquistador.”

Legion Post 60 Ready for Regionals

July 23, 2014

Valley City Legion Post 60 carry the No. 3 seed into Thursday’s Grafton Regional Tournament after a 3-13 regular season campaign and look to hit their stride starting with an 11 a.m. debut against Harvey.

“There isn’t a team with better players position-by-position,” said Post 60 head coach Kyle Roelfsema of his squad intent on reducing mistakes in key moments that contributed to seven losses of three or fewer runs.

Thursday’s winner faces Wahpeton at 4 p.m. Thursday, the loser the Grafton-Casselton loser at 6:30 p.m Thursday.

Post 60 scored 4.75 runs per contest and gave up 12.1.
