Haugen, Bison Battle Back

Medina-Pingree/Buchanan junior middle blocker Jordan Thomas piled up 29 kills, six digs, an ace and a block Thursday night at Barnes County North, but Bison 5-foot, 8-inch sophomore setter Jayda Haugen’s 33 assists, 12 digs, two aces and a block helped North come back from a two-set hole for a 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 18-25, 25-18, 15-12) win.

SQUIRREL POWER: Pyle, Central Cass Sweep Maple Valley

Maple Valley and Central Cass, rivals separated by only a 26-mile stretch of Interstate 94, dueled in Tower City on Thursday night but the second-place Squirrels kept their winning ways to give the Raiders their first District 2 loss, 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-15).

Central Cass led a tough first set, 19-18, and eked out a 25-20 win.

Maple Valley trailed only 14-11 and 20-17 in the second, but 25-19 went to the Squirrels.

Central Cass led 6-0 in the third and held on, 25-15.

GAINING GROUND: Homecoming Hi-Liners Host Lisbon Friday

Jared Lentz, Nate Rodriguez, Eli Allen, John Halgrimson, Erik Milender, Lucas Jury, Homecoming King Ben Baasch, Jordan Magnuson and the road-tested Hi-Liners return home in search of a third straight win on Friday as they host AA East Region rival Lisbon at 7 p.m. at Hanna Field.

Valley City, 2-1 in the AA East and 4-2 overall, stands third behind Wahpeton (3-1 East, 5-1 overall) and Fargo Shanley (3-0 East, 5-1 overall) with Oct. 18’s 6 p.m. date at Shanley and Oct. 24’s home closer against fourth-place Central Cass.

Drew Oberlander’s 100 Varsity fill percentage led Laine Schwehr, Austin Lura, Collin Lura, Levi Nix and Matthew Lyter against Oakes in taking the first four games, 180-146, 191-146 and 170-145 and letting three easy spares slip through in a dropped game four, 167-156, but a 178-148 fifth-game win and a 4-1 match.

SENIORS REPEAT: Cousart’s Tackle Helps Seniors Hang On, 6-0

Defense wins Homecoming Powderpuff championships, and Catera Cousart’s tackle sealed the deal.

Cousart’s tackle of April Berntson on 4th-and-6 from the Senior 40 with 20 seconds left Tuesday night handed the red-bound Seniors a 6-0 win — ably officiated by Matt Nielson and Trevor Bakalar — and back-to-back triumphs after last year’s one-point escape.

“We played very good defense,” said Ian Schweitzer, who lent his talents to the Senior coaching staff.

Ondracek, Miller Bounced in State Doubles Quarterfinals

Dalton Ondracek and Brandon Miller, Valley City’s East No. 8 State Doubles tandem, opened State play Friday against Bismarck Legacy’s West No. 1 Brian Swanberg and Michael Janes, falling 6-3, 6-2.

“These two fine young men have a lot to be proud of,” Hi-Liner head coach Matt Nielson said. “They worked their tails off in the season, and it paid off with not only a trip to the State Tournament but an upset victory over the West’s No. 5 seed as well.”

All Kalli Hegerle and West Fargo Sheyenne wanted to do was climb the Eastern Dakota Conference standings Monday night.

Ride, Sheyenne, ride.

Hegerle, the 5-foot, 10-inch freshman setter/middle hitter’s 18 kills, 15 assists, two blocks and two aces lifted the Mustangs to eighth in the win-loss column as they won three of Monday’s final four sets at two-point Homecoming, Senior, Dig Pink and ‘Merica Night opponent Valley City, 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-17).

RUNNING WITH THE WIND: Lentz, Hi-Liners Breeze Past Kindred

Any way the wind blows doesn’t really matter to Jared Lentz.

Lentz, Valley City’s 6-foot, 4-inch senior quarterback vying with 5-foot, 11-inch senior tight end Ben Baasch and Braden Liljenquist for Homecoming King, went 5-of-7 for 47 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for a one-yard score in a 39-degree, 25-mile-per-hour-windy 39-13 win that featured a 24-0 halftime lead at Kindred’s Jerlow Field.

North Star leader Valley City State (2-0 North Star, 4-1 overall) look to expand their win streak to four as they return to Lokken Stadium for Saturday’s 1 p.m. Homecoming against North Star newcomer Waldorf College (1-2 North Star, 2-4 overall) of Forest City, Iowa.

Viking 6-foot, 3-inch, 201-pound sophomore quarterback Kurtis Walls of Laveen, Ariz., leads the youthful Viking attack with 1,265 passing yards, 118 rush yards, 13 touchdowns and five interceptions.
