Viking Men Win, Women Lose at Mayville State

Valley City State’s basketball teams split their North Star Athletic Association conference openers Saturday at Mayville State, the men winning 68-59 while the women lost 76-58 to the No. 16-ranked Comet women.

Joe Dominiak New VCSU Assistant Baseball Coach

Joe Dominiak is Valley City State’s new assistant baseball coach, VCSU announced Friday.

“Joe brings a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge to our coaching staff,” said head coach Casey Olney. “He has coached at every level from high school to Division I. We are excited to have him take over the coaching responsibilities with our pitchers and catchers.”

5th- and 7th-Graders Win Valley City Travel Basketball Tourneys

Valley City’s 5th- and 7th-grade girls travel basketball teams both took first place in Saturday’s Valley City Parks & Recreation tournaments.

The 5th-graders defeated Barnesville and Fargo, won a nailbiter against Wahpeton and finished by beating Jamestown.

The 7th-graders opened with wins over Barnesville and Napoleon, and finished with a defeat of Edgeley.

Bison Championship Trophies Going on Tour

North Dakota State University athletic officials announced Thursday that NDSU’s 2011, 2012 and 2013 NCAA Division I FCS National Championship trophies will tour Scheels locations in Bismarck, Minot, Grand Forks and Fargo from Friday, Feb. 7 through Sunday, Feb. 9, “to give the people of North Dakota an opportunity to see and get their picture taken with the trophies.”

New Bison head football coach Chris Klieman and quarterbacks coach Randy Hedberg will appear with the trophies at three of the four locations.

Valley City Gymnasts Best Davies, South and Wahpeton

January 24, 2014

Hi-Liner gymnastics took first all-around in Thursday night's home meet with 138.400 points to finish ahead of Fargo South, Fargo Davies and Wahpeton.

Freshman Taylor Johnson took second in individual all-around competition with 35.550 points, junior Abby Brown sixth with 33.300, sophomore Brienne Roehrich seventh with 33.050, 7th-grader Michaela Thibert ninth with 32.850 and 8th-grader Hannah Sorensen 11th with 32.100.

NDSU Women Take Down VCSU, 83-61

January 22, 2014

North Dakota State junior guard Brooke LeMar scored 21 points and sophomore forwards Holly Johnson and Marena Whittle 20 and 18, respectively, as the Bison defeated Valley City State, 83-61, in an exhibition game in Fargo on Wednesday night.

Viking junior guard Sadiqah Jihad and junior forward Megan Trautman put up 10 points each to lead VCSU.

NDSU shot 52 percent in the game to VCSU's 32 percent. The Bison scored 50 points in the paint, the Vikings 22.

With the loss, the Vikings' six-game win streak came to an end.

Enderlin Girls Squeeze by LaMoure/Litchville-Marion

Enderlin senior center Kelsey Laufenberg scored 16 points, senior forward Megan Johnson 15 and junior forward Mai Syverson 11 as the Eagles held on against LaMoure/Litchville-Marion in LaMoure, 51-44.

Points abounded on Tuesday night as Enderlin sophomore guard/forward GrahamHurlburt scored 27 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range, senior guard Daniel Lindgren 24 on 3-of-4 from downtown, senior center Jared Kittleson 12 and senior guard Austin Dixson 10 as the Eagles soared over LaMoure/Litchville-Marion in LaMoure, 82-65.

Lady Hi-Liners Pull Away for Fourth Straight Win

Valley City senior forwards Madison Taylor and Dierra Diegel, senior guard Jessica Denholm and junior guard Clarissa Olson all scored in double figures for the second straight game as the Hi-Liners beat Eastern Dakota Conference rival Fargo South with a strong second half on the road Tuesday night, 50-36.

Hi-Liner Gymnasts Win All-Around vs. Jamestown

Hi-Liner gymnastics enjoyed a dual meet win against Jamestown on Tuesday night and worked with different competitive alignments as they did it.

“Tonight was a little bit of a different format — we made it a little bit more fun for the girls,” head coach David Fisher said. “What we do is make four teams by mixing both teams together into four different squads, so in each squad there are girls from each school. They get a chance to meet new kids and interact with each other that way — it was a lot of fun overall.”
