Red River Boys Tennis Wrangles Hi-Liners

Valley City boys tennis ventured to Grand Forks on Tuesday to face umpteen-time defending State champion Red River in a match that the Roughriders took, 9-0, but greatness is wrought with formidable opponents.

“Red River looks as dominant as ever,” Valley City head coach Matt Nielson said. “They will be the overwhelming favorites to win the State tournament this year, and deservedly so.”

Go Far Woman Returns

Go Far Woman, a women-only running event that held its inaugural race on Aug. 24, 2013, in Fargo, returned on Saturday with over 1,400 finishing in the four events, including participants from Valley City, listed below.

Go Far Woman celebrates the strength, perseverance and courage of women of all ages, types and athletic abilities, and raises money for the Essentia NICU with Newt Running, an organization formed in honor of the late Dr. Renee Schwandt.

VCSU Football Fan Zone, Tailgating Thursday

Valley City State University and the VCSU Booster Board will be hosting tailgating and the Nodak Mutual Fan Zone prior to Thursday’s home football game against University of Jamestown.

Tailgating and the Nodak Mutual Fan Zone start at 4 p.m. Thursday and are free. The Viking Booster Board will be serving food during tailgating for a free-will donation.

The Nodak Mutal Fan Zone is a family-friendly event that will have games and prizes for all ages, including a football toss and inflatable games.

Central Tennis Blanks Hi-Liners in Opener

Hi-Liner boys tennis, featuring an influx of new talent, hosted Friday’s season opener against Grand Forks Central as they fell, 9-0.

“This year, we increased our numbers to 21 total tennis players to include eight 7th-graders,” Hi-Liner head coach Matt Nielson said. “Because we had many new faces and not many returning, we played 10 Varsity on Friday to get many different people experience and to see where each player is against an opponent. We are figuring out our best lineup in both singles and doubles.”

Jaden Anderson, Fargo Make Babe Ruth World Series

Jaden Anderson and Midwest Plains Regional champion Fargo opened the Babe Ruth World Series against host Longview, Wash. at David B. Story Field on Thursday, falling 5-3 before a 10-0 defeat to Torrance, Calif., on Saturday.

Anderson, whose father is Jeff Anderson of Carrington, N.D.’s Central City Auto Auction, and whose step-grandfather is Tony Heinze of Page, N.D.’s Heinze-Trottier-Parkman Auto Services, is a right-handed pitcher soon to become a sophomore at Fargo Davies High School.

Hi-Liner Youth Shines at Hillsboro Cross Country Meet

Saturday’s drizzly Hillsboro cross country meet turned out to be a grand event as most of the Eastern Dakota Conference powers turned up to race, as did schools from Grand Forks, Fargo, West Fargo, Wahpeton and smaller schools from eastern North Dakota and Minnesota.

Valley City’s junior high girls team took third in the 7-9 Division behind Fargo Shanley and Fargo Davies as Sharon Michael, Presley Curtis and Sophie Boe, led the Hi-Liner pack in their cross country debuts.

Eliza Schueneman, Mikayla Wolla, and Rebecca Thompson rounded out the bunch.

Suzanne Fisher New Hi-Liner Gymnastics Coach

Valley City Public Schools announces that Suzanne Fisher, a USA Gymnastics-certified coach with over 30 years of combined experience in dance, competitive cheer and gymnastics, is the new head Hi-Liner gymnastics coach.

Fisher enters her third year in the Hi-Liner Program, having spent her first two as an assistant coach with her husband, David Fisher. Suzanne Fisher is also the Valley City Twisters Gymnastics Club head coach of three years.

Johnson, Miller, Baasch Chosen for Under Armour Recruiting Classic

Jesse Johnson, Jake Miller and Ben Baasch got the call.

All three Valley City Legion Post 60 aces earned an invite to Dec. 27 - Dec. 30’s Under Armour Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic at Mesa, Ariz.’s Gene Autry Sports Complex, the former spring training home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Johnson, Miller and Baasch learned of their Classic qualifications just days after competing in Sunday’s Dickinson, N.D., Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryouts, having been nominated by Post 60 head coach Kyle Roelfsema.

Color My Stride 5k Coming to Bismarck

University of Mary Athletic Training Student Association will host its first color run, the Color My Stride 5k, in support of the UMATSA organization and its 2014 charity partner Benton’s Hope on Saturday, Sept. 6.

Packet pick-up is 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. with an 8 a.m. start. Pre-registration is encouraged. T-shirt sizes are limited.

Baseball Factory Tests Post 60 Stars

Legion Post 60’s Jesse Johnson, Jake Miller and Ben Baasch, sporting honorary attire, showed off their skills to scouts and college coaches in Sunday’s Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryouts in Dickinson, N.D.

“Congratulations,” Baseball Factory director Bryan Dunkel wrote in respective letters to Johnson, Miller and Baasch.
