Valley City State softballâ€™s 5-1 and 10-6 Saturday home sweep of Dakota State brought them two wins closer to their first conference championship since 1990, the season in which the Vikings won their fifth straight championship.
The Vikings stand atop the North Star Athletic Association with a 10-2 conference record and a 21-19 overall mark, just above University of Jamestownâ€™s 10-4 North Star record. Valley City Stateâ€™s remaining games are Sundayâ€™s 1 p.m-and-3 p.m. home doubleheader against Dakota State, and Monday against Mayville State. Jamestown faces Presentation College on Sunday.
Hi-Liner baseball held a 2-1 lead through six innings of Saturdayâ€™s first game against visiting Fargo Shanley, but a two-out Deacon triple in the top of the seventh scored two runs for the 3-2 win. Valley City staged a comeback after trailing 5-0 early in game two but fell short, 6-3.
Hi-Liner softball swept Saturdayâ€™s Detroit Lakes Tournament with an 11-1 six-inning conquest of host Detroit Lakes (Minn.), an 8-5 triumph over Fergus Falls (Minn.) and an 11-6 defeat of Fargo Shanley.
Valley City senior Austen Meyer struck out four Grand Forks Central batters in six road innings on Thursday, but Knights senior Spencer Meyer fanned 10 Hi-Liners in six frames for the 5-0 game one win. Valley City outhit the Knights 7-6 in game two but came up short, 4-3, in a sixth-inning comeback bid.
Central brought in single runs in the second, third and fifth, and two more in the sixth, on eight total hits and three Valley City errors. Hi-Liner bats produced five hits.
Hi-Liner boys golf came away with four team points at Tuesdayâ€™s West Fargo Invite at Village Green Golf Course.

Hi-Liner girls tennis hit the road for Tuesdayâ€™s match at Fargo South and came up with a monumental 8-1 win.

Valley City State sophomore thrower Jessica Meland is the North Star Athletic Association Field Athlete of the Week after setting a new school record in the hammer throw and qualifying for the NAIA National Championships with a 50.29-meter (165-foot) toss for the individual title at Fridayâ€™s Northern State Open in Aberdeen, S.D.
Meland, of Harvey, N.D., currently ranks 12th in the nation and finished fourth in the womenâ€™s Shot Put with a distance of 11.66 meters (38 feet, 3.25 inches).
