Lady Hi-Liners Take Out Fargo North in EDC Quarterfinal; Face No. 1 West Fargo in Semis Friday

Eastern Dakota Conference Girls Tournament No. 4 seed Valley City figured out No. 5 seed Fargo North’s 2-3 zone early in Tuesday’s semifinal and rode junior guard Claire Olson’s double-double to a 65-50 win as three Hi-Liners in all scored double-digit points.

Valley City faces No. 1, Class A second-ranked West Fargo in the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Fargo Civic Center. With a win, the Hi-Liners enter the EDC Championship at 6 p.m. Saturday at North Dakota State University. With a loss, Valley City plays a State qualifier Saturday at 11 a.m. at NDSU.

Central Cass Takes Revenge on Maple Valley in District 2 Tourney Final

Maple Valley 5-foot-10-inch sophomore forward Rylee Nudell put her top-seed, fourth-ranked Raiders on her back with a 23-point, 12-rebound double-double in Monday’s District 2 Tournament championship game, but Central Cass 6-foot-3-inch senior center Faith Dooley came alive in the second half to help the second-seed, eighth-ranked Squirrels hang on late and avenge Jan. 25’s 51-43 loss at Maple Valley, 58-52 at the Fargo Civic Center.

Hi-Liner Father-Son Wrestling Dual March 13

Hi-Liner wrestling coach Aaron Larson announced that the Valley City High School Wrestling Awards Banquet (with a light lunch) will take place on Thursday, March 13 at 6 p.m.

A father/son dual will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Hi-Liner Activity Center. Coach Beckman has agreed to coach the Fathers team.

Stemen Farms, Inc. are your Classic League Tournament champions, and Pine Country Nursery are your Olympic League Tournament champions.

Stemen Farms took the fifth seed in the Classic League Tournament and knocked off No. 4 Labor Club 60-31 in the first round before upsetting No. 1 Smith Farms 81-78 in the quarterfinals and No. 2 seed Nodak Mutual
Insurance 79-70 for the championship.

It looked good early on for the North Star Postseason Tournament No. 3 Viking men as they built an early 14-4 lead behind seven quick points from senior guard Aaron Duske on Saturday night, but No. 2 Dakota State pulled off an 18-4 run, capped by one of senior guard Dylan Hale’s seven three-pointers in the evening, to take a 22-18 lead that they did not give up en route to a 74-56 semifinal win.

Valley City State led rival No. 2 Jamestown — ranked third nationally — for most of Sunday’s North Star Women’s Postseason Tournament semifinal, but the Jimmies surged back at home to end the Vikings’ season, 75-66.

Maple Valley 5-foot-10-inch sophomore forward Rylee Nudell scored 21 points on Friday to help top seed Maple Valley beat No. 8 Richland 51-41 in the first round of the District 2 Tournament, then scored 33 points — 23 in the first half — and snagged 12 rebounds in a 50-41 win over No. 4 Oak Grove.

Junior forward Jared Lentz and sophomore guard Dalton Ondracek led No. 10 seed Valley City scorers with 20 and 14 respective points in Saturday’s Eastern Dakota Conference Basketball Tournament play-in game at No. 9 Grand Forks Central, but a double-double from Central senior forward/center Josh Schumer and a near-double-double from junior guard/forward Jake Mussman helped the Knights ride on with a strong second half, 60-45.
